    Chojubai - crossroads

Like Brian said that’s a pretty sizeable trunk for a chojubai, however it doesn’t have that typical craggy bark that comes with age? It’s smooth because it’s simply not that old dispite it’s size or can it be chalked up to genetics?

    Chojubai Already on the Move

I have yet to get flowers on mine after 2(?) years, and same with the Ume I have. I’ve had one bloom on the Ume in Jan 17’, and since then nothing. Never a chojubai. They’re in a grow bed and have put on a lot of growth too, I’m hoping to get some this year on both the chojubai and the 4 Ume in...

    Dwarf Lemon 🍋

Calamondin take their time trunking up though, and Kinzu beyond just cuttings seem to be impossible to locate in the US. But both have great qualities for bonsai or just ornamental plants with edible fruit

    Guidance for Kotohime

The Ibo Nishiki is the large one in the grow box on the left, it’s actually on the bench still because it’s roots went wild and grew into the treated boards underneath. These benches are on their last legs anyway, need to make new ones this year

    Guidance for Kotohime

Yep they’re all outside, currently on a raised platform under this bench with a tarp over it on the colder nights, only 2 times so far. I would say generally the cork bark JM are more tolerant, I have an “Ibo Nishiki” cork JM and it is certainly more hardy than the koto was. Although, I had...

    Dwarf Lemon 🍋

What makes this a “dwarf” lemon? Looks similar to my lemon, in terms of leaf size. Nice trunk, however it Will take some creativity to fix the nebari

    Guidance for Kotohime

I have certainly found this year an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure with these issues. Previously I had foregone all the preemptive preventative treatments, thinking they were unnecessary, however it’s quite clear to me now that it is a necessary evil. I have read countless...

    Chojubai Already on the Move

Sounds like you wouldn’t be too worried then? Coldest it’s been was last night at ~30 degrees

Dormant spray - what do you use (if anything)?

Thank you, I’ll have to see if I can find any posts concerning it on here

    Chojubai Already on the Move

Yeah I think I’m going to be in the exact same boat as you pretty soon here. But I’m vastly unprepared atm, I mean who expects to be repotting in December?? I honestly don’t even know if the Toyos ever went fully dormant, they need reported though

Dormant spray - what do you use (if anything)?

Does anyone else use Jin Seal? It says not for any other purpose besides bleaching deadwood, but I’d like to know if It’s the same stuff used for dormant spraying. Can anyone confirm if it’s safe and if the above stated dilution is accurate?

    Guidance for Kotohime

I’ve now realized, all too late, my pattern of failure with this species. Initially they grow vigorously for a season or two with no problems. They are then ready for a cutback, and following this they never fully recover, slowly weakening and dying from /anthracrose/. A healthy maple should...

    Chojubai Already on the Move

Weather has been exceptionally warm here for this time of year, in the upper 60’s and 70’s. With that, some species like quince have decided that winter has already come and gone and are waking up. This chojubai in particular is ready for spring, but with real winter not even started, what...

    Kinzu (Golden Bean kumquat)

Calamondin don’t really trunk up all that quickly in my experience. They probably will, though, given enough time or perhaps if you wire them that would accelerate growth as well. It is a very forgiving tree, mine has withstood a lot of abuse. I’ve had mine many years, originally one of those...

    Kinzu (Golden Bean kumquat)

Oh that sounds like a great opportunity, very cool. I’ll be on the watch for the thread!

    Kinzu (Golden Bean kumquat)

I am incredibly jealous! I assume this has to be an import, is that correct? Do you have a thread for it?

    Kinzu (Golden Bean kumquat)

That’s a really purdy plant for the price! I’m guessing you’ll be incorporating this species in your propagating business ASAP? Lol

Some of the nicer trees I've lost.

Rigt I remember reading this now. The only light at the end of the tunnel would have been if you had amazing insurance.. even then though it’s a major loss. Glad you were able to overcome it though

Some of the nicer trees I've lost.

I cannot imagine how upset you are. That’s really a shame, what was it that happened again? Is it all collateral from that tree that fell during a snowstorm?

Some of the nicer trees I've lost.

Is the third one a Goji? And you indeed lost it or no?

    Kinzu (Golden Bean kumquat)

May I ask where you might have acquired this one?

    Dormant Sprays

You are correct, that was not the article I had read. This was much much more helpful, thanks again. I think I don’t have the correct LS, the stuff I have is for Jins (I think it’s called Top Jin and comes in a small green bottle).

    Dormant Sprays

I consistently used daconil and peroxide for at least three consecutive weeks, and then less peroxide but still daconil the weeks before and after. I’ll look into the other products you suggested too, thanks

    Dormant Sprays

I appreciate the detailed response. Although the JBP I just purchased does have needle cast, this isn’t the problem I was referring to. I’ve struggled the past year or two with trident/Japanese maples and “Anthracrose”. “” because I don’t know for certain that’s what it is. What I need to do is...
