How did your trees fare in this summer's weather ?

Our summer has been a little cooler and much wetter this year. All my plants have been very happy about that. The only thing is, since the hurricane passed by, I have been innudated with bugs! I think they blew in with the storm because this year I've had to actively fight them much more than...

    Watching Hurricane Issac

We survived just fine! Today we could finally come home, due to the roads being blocked off by water and debris. But we're home now and doing good. Libby

    Watching Hurricane Issac

Yes, Stacy, I was really hoping that it would stay to the east of us. Even a direct hit, as long as it was cat 2 or less, would be better than the thing coming onshore in Mississippi. We'll stay until we have to go, but we won't be on the island during the storm. The next couple of days will...

Wiring the bonsai INTO the container

Thanks, Brian. I'm pretty sure I can do that now. What a beautiful tree! I wish I could have Japanese maples, but I'm too close to the gulf here on the island. it takes 2-3 years, but they all die off due to the salt air. Tridents like here, but just not the same, is it? Libby

Wiring the bonsai INTO the container

Question. I have trouble with wiring the trees down properly, and still leaving the upper most roots free to grow into good nebari. I mean I think I'd mark the roots too much if I put the wires on top of them. How do others handle this. Libby

    A courious question for everyone

Here's a related question. I tend to stick lots of cuttings in pots as I go. When they root i've got more babies to do something with. How long does it take to grow out of this phase? Or do some never grow out of it. There's just so many plants you can give away to people. Libby

    Lantana root over rock

In a pot, Lantana like a lot of water, unlike in the ground where they are drought tolerant. Don't let it dry out completely for very long at all. Libby
