Revive Seiju Elm after pest attack

The mucilage secretion is not uncommon in elms. It is a response to disturbed tissue (chewing insects primarily which the tree tries to overwhelm with goo to stop) slippery elm for instance is named for the secretions BTW immediately discount any “advice” about Dutch Elm Disease. Whoever...

Appraising Very Large Production Quality Pots

Shipping is an issue. Wigerts was the only place I could find that shipped BIG pots. Found a few other places 500 miles out with smaller selections who wouldn’t ship.

Appraising Very Large Production Quality Pots

Severe structural cracks are a deal breaker. Those cracks will get worse or end in disaster since the bigger the pot the more stress it’s under. I have purchased pots in the 28” to 30” range. They’re hard to come by and price would depend on how hard such a container has been used. Some minor...

    Constant Rain

The material of the bench doesn’t make any difference wood plastic whatever The angle of the pot is the trick. Water drains more quickly and thoroughly as the water table of the pot elongates-tilt the pot the water table in it becomes longer. Gravitational force increases which increase water...

First time material on its way. What should I prepare for?

Yes. Keep it inside in a bright place (supplemental lighting would be good as well) and don’t overwater. Normally Chinese elms should be kept outside 24/7/365. Repeated overwintering indoors weaken and eventually kills them. One winter won’t kill it. It has to go back outside once freeze/frost...

First time material on its way. What should I prepare for?

Ask the seller if it’s been greenhouse grown all year. If it has it probably is still vulnerable to freezing since it may not have entered dormancy. That can be a problem if the nightime temps are already below freezing on average where you are. Dormancy is not induced by cold. It is induced by...

Would you bother make a Tanuki from this

Depends on how it is used. Outdoors maybe a couple of years if you let be in an arid area. Less if it rains a lot. Conifer wood can last longer because it has resins in. Some hardwoods do as well Fwiw like sulfur is better surface preservative if you’re not trying to retain structural integrity...

Would you bother make a Tanuki from this

The thing about these pieces of wood is they have no real movement and feel Kind of heavy visually. Those broad expanses of dead wood will make the thin channels of live wood and foliage look kind of weird for a very long time. Wood hardener used on such broad surfaces will look cloudy and...

I guess I'm a snob---- the reverse kind

Oh Stop being hurt. Cmon be honest —you think any one who spends more than you do is needlessly pissing their money away. If you don’t spend the time mixing soil or not using plastic tubs you’re not really doing the work. You hint that you’re being a snob but get offended when someone points...

I guess I'm a snob---- the reverse kind

Oh puhleeze. I’m almost as old as you. My mom grew in depression dust bowl Texas my dad in depression era Appalachia. Both instilled frugality in me as well. One lesson they taught was to buy something ONCE instead of buying the same thing cheaper three times and replacing it three times. Thats...

I guess I'm a snob---- the reverse kind

Always baffles me that people think spending less money on bad material makes more sense. No money does not equal quality but it’s certainly an indication of it.

I guess I'm a snob---- the reverse kind

Y'all really think that because you spend more money on bonsai that it's less work and less genuine?😆 This kind of post comes up every so often and it always disappoints me. “I’d rather spend the time and effort instead of cash” carries a silly judgement with it. I find most of the people that...

    Artificial rock juniper planting

Virtuals are misleading in the real world. What is likely to happen is you will get the trees out of the containers and find there is no real good way to get them close enough to the rock to make things look good. Root masses on trees that old tend to be rigid several inches out from the trunk...

TV shows & movies with bonsai in them?

Watching a Peacock series “All her Fault” and a huge bonsai showed up. It looks to me like a redwood (and a very very good one) it looks real (has a few inconspicuous tie down wires) it’s pretty large. Would love to know where they sourced it. Usually bonsai aren’t this good

Which Bald cypress (Taxodium distichium) would you choose and why?

Fwiw all of the trees in the first two photos were collected in SE Virginia by friends of mine three years ago using landowner permission and technical know how. They own a bonsai nursery and have many BC bonsai they’ve work on for years.

Which Bald cypress (Taxodium distichium) would you choose and why?

How many BC collectors do you know? A blanket statement like this indicates you know several personally. You also don’t provide a location. What “Central Park” are you talking about? NYC? Seems to that Recommending people “dig their own” can lead to the very unethical activity you mention...

A bonsai you designed on your own

He didn’t really ask for young plants. He says cuttings over ten years old. A collected tree is basically a cutting starting pretty much as a “regular” cutting from a tree. No root system not branch structure, chosen because it has some good qualities etc. Not playing word games just stating...
