    Start Ginkgo bonsai

It it four or five inches above where envision “final height” to avoid die back from. Interfering with plans and leave room for extra places for the tree to bud

    Bonsai Terrarium Project

His famous work is about death and decay 😆 he kills reallly nice bonsai for effect. Not really an example to follow if you want a living bonsai. Most, if not all, of the bonsai he uses are killed (bare-rooted, set loose in orbit etc) https://atmos.earth/azuma-makoto-flower-art-interview/

My first Maple! Let's CHOP IT! lol

You are NOT interested in what anything above the first 8-12 inches of trunk. The rest of the tree is mostly sacrifice. Trying to keep as much of the orginal trunk as possible instead of focusing on what is needed (the bottom. Third of the trunk) is a beginner mistake You will regrow the...

My first Maple! Let's CHOP IT! lol

Tridents are better at handling heat and wind. Cutting it will slow thickening which will already be slower since it's in a container. First things first, developing the thickness of the trunk is the priority. That means letting it grow without chopping if you want to accomplish that priority...

My first Maple! Let's CHOP IT! lol

I’d just learn to care for the tree for the first year. It’s a little late for trunk chops. Particularly if you’re in an area where frost and freezes happen--although I guess that may not be an issue in west Texas

Question on Satsuki Azalea. Cuttings in Late Summer?

Yeah. Not a satsuki. Indicum. Doesn’t make that much difference. You have a case of either thrips or lace wing from the damage on the leaves. P Thrips are Pretty common on azaleas around here. They’re treated with systemic s most effectively.

Question on Satsuki Azalea. Cuttings in Late Summer?

There are many varieties of azalea that have small flowers. Some are cross bred part satsuki. A satsuki six feet tall would be very rare in Alexandria. Indicum is extremely common and planted commonly from the 1940s on. Large examples of those are very common.

    How to prevent bonsai theft?

Fences and keeping your mouth shut are the most effective. Guard dogs are overrated by their owners. Most dogs really aren’t going to put up much of a fight if confronted. Even if they make a lot of noise. It’s the noise that does the job. Threatening appearance is greats deterrent too. BUT...

Question on Satsuki Azalea. Cuttings in Late Summer?

Unless it is specifically labeled or you know it’s history it’s very unlikely to be a satsuki particularly since it is so large.

Dawn Redwood Questions - Nursery Stock

Do a search on bald cypress trunk reduction. Mostly the same procedure. Species is pretty strong grower. Like BC it can take drastic reduction and fill in matching taper pretty quickly (quickly is relative a few years of growing out and chopping back. Sounds scary but it’s not really.

    Loblolly Pine Question

Putting some movement in the trunk and not pruning to slow lower trunk development. Read up as much as you can about how to handle this species It’s not common and it’s a three needle line not two or four like Japanese black or white pines. What works for them might not work for loblolly...

    Bonsai Terrarium Project

This probably should be a separate thread in artificial bonsai but I actually got one of these to put on a desk shelf inside. Made of wire. Real shito sized bonsai pot

    Bonsai Terrarium Project

Yeah. I get it but doesn’t make it make any more sense. It’s mostly a “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results” kind of thing

    Bonsai Terrarium Project

I’m not really trying to be a downer just skeptical. I mean you can probably get a pretty nice fake bonsai for the same money as you’ve spent here on a hulking glaring plug in display.

    Juniper from Garden Supply

Juniper is fine with winters here BUT there are some things to keep in mind. It’s important the tree remains outside and gets watered when it needs it. Dried out soil can be a winter killer. I leave my conifers out set in the ground. Not a lot of mulch. I mulch them not to protect roots but to...

What should a hornbeam look like?

Posted that link already 👍😁 and you’re right. Most all hornbeam growing near me are long lanky sometimes busted. There is an eastern hophornbeam ias a landscape tree in my neighborhood that is more similar to the open field grow hornbeam in pics above.

    The end of spring repotting?

Depends on sun exposure , temperature changes, etc. I keep some trees in cold pits mulched with a lean-to roof to block southern sun. I also have garden bed situated so they don’t get much direct sun exposure in the afternoon. Still February and March can be problem months as temperatures...

    Will this help Nebari

Not really. This is not easily collectible and not really worth the time. Chalk it up to learning about stock selection. If it were a deciduous tree you could air layer above the inverse (BUT the top would have to be worth air layering- same for conifers but air layering them takes longer...

    The Bonsai Soil Argument

It depends on the source of the lava rock. Volcanic rocks are not all the same. Some are “fluffier” than others. What you’re assuming as lava rock for soil is may not be what many are using.
