Where do you want to see a big PBE/Nationals level show?

Great point Wood! I think you may have changed my mind on the impact of adding workshops-as 136 spaces is not moving the needle tremendously. And the amount of effort required to make all that happen is crazy.

Where do you want to see a big PBE/Nationals level show?

I think you're posing some fantastic questions. Out of all of them, I'm really curious what's the #1 thing which currently isn't being done that would make more people come to the PBE given the same ticket price, location, etc? I have a hunch that one thing might be quality workshops. I feel...

    Pacific Bonsai Expo 2024

Thank you all so much, it's an gigantic honor:) @NaoTK and @Sansokuu are national treasures! I'm super proud that they are American Bonsai potters. We are truly lucky to have them! I have no idea how they brought so many high level containers to the PBE all with a baby attached to one of them...

Paying $2000 for this Shishigashira... big brain or dumb af?

I think that price seems a bit steep. I'm sure you can find another Shi Shi landscape tree to air layer for much less with same potential.

    Kiryu Soil

Agree with the first three replies above. A few important points. Kiryu is not a good replacement for Akadama because it's quite different than Akadama. It would be a great addition to mix in with Akadama, but pumice is a much cheaper alternative that works possibly slightly better. Akadama...

    Growing large trunks

Agree w/ @Wires_Guy_wires You can def use those types of pots, or any type of container. Those should dry out a bit faster compared to a solid container without holes on the sides. Personally I just use coarse Perlite to grow trunks. Another good option could be Perlite and Coco Coir. Work...

    Dwarf Alberta Spruce Pruning

Generally speaking, I'd pick one major operation per year. Before you prune/style you want to make sure the tree is growing healthy and strong. Because this is from a nursery, I'd repot first to get the tree in good soil. Fertilize heavy the following growing season, make sure the tree is...

    American Beech Air Layer

Personally, I would remove the plastic bag very carefully and examine where you have roots coming off the trunk. You do have roots, but I'd want that bag to be quite packed before removing the layer. I'd carefully comb out the top area to see if the roots are coming off the trunk 360 degrees...

Biogold Original Fertilizer is just fermented chicken manure? Has anyone fermented their own fertilizer?

I've imported Bio-Gold Directly from Japan and when I received it, the company was required to list the ingredients, I can tell you there were more ingredients than what you have listed above. One thing to note is they source the chicken manure from high quality egg laying chickens, which is...

    Limber Pine -- SoCal

That's a great question. I've never had a Bristlecone. I'd imagine there aren't a ton of them in So Cal. My best guess is that they will be similar to other high mountain pines and require a dormant period-but I could be wrong. They are a high mountain pine, where they go dormant in their...

    Limber Pine -- SoCal

Randy is the man! Now what you could do, is buy one, board it up at Peter Tea's house and have Peter graft it over. I'd look into Black Pine or if you want to experiment you could use Bishop Pine which is native to CA. Once it's fully grafted you can take it home. Or you could keep the pine...

    Limber Pine -- SoCal

Unfortunately, I think most high mountain pines like Limber will not do well in So Cal past 4-6 years. Likely due to not getting cold enough/chill hour requirements in the winter. A hypothesis thrown out by Michael Hagedorn in his book Bonsai Hersey was the Day/Night temp differential might...

New to using RO for watering

Solid to hear all around! 10 ppm is great, wish mine got down that low. I'm around 30-60 ppm after my water goes through the RO.

New to using RO for watering

@zeejet Julian is a great resource to ask about using RO water. I personally use RO water as well and have seen great benefit in my tree's health after switching to RO water. Short answer to your question is- you don't need to be concerned about adding anything back into your water if you...
