I don't think it is good in the long run. The extra humidity looks to be keeping your soil from drying in between waterings, the moisture is wicking up the trunks.

I have used it on just about everything, except ficus. By ornamentals it means non- food plants. Since it has translaminar properties, it is absorbed into the plant, especially the leaves.

Just use some real pesticide and kill them, while you are giving them a bath with soap spray and reading about it, they are eating your tree. There is nothing wrong with the responsible use of pesticide.

I use malathion for the adults and systemic for the rest. The are tough to manage once the get established.

This entire experiment has been kinda already done, all of the BC that I have posted on Bnut have been grown from seed and have always been grown with the roots submerged to the top of the soil. One of them is from 1986. Lots of swelling at the base, knees, and some fluting, but not much. John

The damage is done in the spring. These are the same leaves that were infected in the Spring that are on the tree in the Summer. Several applications of Daconil before and after bud break in the spring will knock this out.

Daconil will work on most fungus that affect your bonsai. Spectrum works great for tougher problems. There is nothing wrong with responsible use of pesticides or fungicides. What kind of issues are having with your elms?

I used to be plagued with them, as well as rust mites on bald cypress and gall mites on serissa. I use Avid, a miticide, twice yearly and have little or no problems with them now.

In the beginning I used a lot of wire. Now it is mostly clip and grow with the occasional wire here and there.
