    Instagram scammer.

It’s the bonsai.mike2020 account that appears to be legit and the source of some of the stolen images. Post in thread 'Instagram scammer.' https://www.bonsainut.com/threads/instagram-scammer.61494/post-1065674

Pruning in the heat, leaves are swamp coolers?

I’m going wait a week to thin and clean, assuming the forecast holds for temps back below 95F. And probably not, and it does not. But I guess I should start one. It gets neglected, because I’ve just never been happy with the branch pad definition and silhouette. Thank you for the compliment.

    Azalea Health Issue?

The black spots on underside look like like insect poop. The stippled yellow color looks like insect damage. Check for thrips. The yellow damage could also be spidermites. I’m sure you get chlorosis problems from high alkalinity water in FL, it I think the more pressing problem is insects.

Pruning in the heat, leaves are swamp coolers?

Thank you, those are good points. Agreed! Plus the humidity is +55% so the heat index was breaking 110F. Another good reason to put off being outside!

    Instagram scammer.

It looks like to me that one account is a real account of serious hobbyist in Ohio and the other is the scammer lifting his and others pics to scam. The 2nd account has zero mention of selling and I’m not going to post the user’s name so they don’t get associated with this scammer account. OP...

Pruning in the heat, leaves are swamp coolers?

All of this, because I’ve been busy and my J. prostrata semi-cascade has become a landscape shrub. I’d like thin it out and cut back to branch outlines. But we are finally getting the summer heat with 7 days of +102F. We have had a pretty mild summer with only a couple days above 100F in my...

Pruning in the heat, leaves are swamp coolers?

To expand, trees move water through capillary action driven by transpiration at the leaf stomata. The cooling effect of evapo-transpiration keep the leaves cool. I’ve seen it cited that 5–10% of water transport is photosynthesis and the remainder is for cooling. It seems to me that the water...

Pruning in the heat, leaves are swamp coolers?

During stretches of 100F+ summer heat, is there pruning work that could be done on juniper, deciduous, and broadleaf evergreens? Obviously in some places, those temps are just called “summer” and I guess the work must go on. Although stressing the tree through wound healing or foliage mass...

    Root maker pots

What size? 1 gallon? I’d consider including smaller particles (1/16” - 1/8”) in your mixes when you grow in nursery containers (including RM). Either aggregates for conifers or include organics for deciduous. The perched water table is lower in the nursery can and you can get away with a finer...

Looks like S. Cal. coast will be the Gulf Coast

Wow! Heard the news, but didn’t realize the wind was forecasted to remain that strong that far north. Darn, we moved 1 year to soon and could have possibly felt an earthquake and hurricane in the same month! Then 2+ inches of forecasted rain, maybe a mudslide! With those predicted wind speeds...

AND WHAT ABOUT LAVA...MORE GOOD NEWS!

Good idea! I did reach out this morning and got an amazingly quick response from Dr. Cashman and Dr. Deligne who were able to get an answer from the other author, Rick Conrey, who did all the XRF. The response is below. The absence of reported Boron from the samples was because it was not...

    Cjr Mr Twister Ficus

That Is Awesome!!! My unsolicited advice is keep the weird! Up-pot and pot-in-pot for escape roots and then let sacrifice branches from several places. Also pack the trunk with sphagnum moss in plastic and get a ton of aerial roots to intertwine in, out and around the trunk. An eventual...

AND WHAT ABOUT LAVA...MORE GOOD NEWS!

From previous literature searches(1), boron as a component of oceanic crusts can be sub-ducted and incorporated into volcanic arc magmas. Although due to the fluid-mobil nature of boron, it becomes depleted towards the mantle and from volcanoes that source from deeper magmas. There is apparently...

    Berras japanese maple #1

With slightly thinner looking grafted whips than yours, I’ve left my thread and approach grafts on for 2yrs on trident maples. The blue tack side appears to be healed over, but has the parent cambium grown over in the red tack side? I would remove that putty and examine that side. I’ve also...

Need guidance - dormancy indoors (several species)

@Shibui, just typed everything I was going to say. My point about the window is just to be aware of the possible temperature challenges. I grow things next to a window in the winter with no issue. But you are in a colder climate. I’d favor the window and light over a floor. But you’ll have to...

Need guidance - dormancy indoors (several species)

As stated on the other thread, growing outdoor trees indoors is challenging. BUT, your listed plants all have a tropical or subtropical lineage which makes it easier. I would treat the Chinese elm as subtropical and not try to force dormancy. Definitely don’t put it in the fridge. That is a...

AND WHAT ABOUT LAVA...MORE GOOD NEWS!

Lastly, it is not my intention to poke fun at bonsai professionals who obviously have more data points and observations than I do on the subject. I took a few trees over from a long-time hobbyist who grew in 100% black scoria, including deciduous. I was unable to keep them happy in that media...

I also found it interesting that searches for boron AND lava & boron AND scoria both had top hits for this Michael’s bonsai discussion. Also, this concern from a cacti grower in 2007. “The rumor in the past was that the pumice from the AZ mines was high in boron and not as suitable for our...

AND WHAT ABOUT LAVA...MORE GOOD NEWS!

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7073067/ It should be noted that Boron is an essential trace element for plant and animal life. From above link, the majority of the world’s ag soils contain 5 - 30 ppm total boron. As you can guess the toxicity level is widely dependent on plant...

For reference, below is the free access to that paper. The geochemistry was analyzed by XRF. Apparently, Boron is difficult to analyze for via XRF and almost impossible with a handheld unit.
