    Growing trunks healing scars

I have a Japanese maple currently in my grow bed I'm growing out the next section of trunk. I've cut it and the leader has grown this season. Question is what do I do at the cut now to help the tree transition smoothly and heal over the cut?

    rhododendron leaves fading away....help!

I don't know what it is but I'm interested in hearing opinions. I had the same thing happen to mine a few weeks ago. Now it's completely brown but still pliable. It did something similar last year but came back this year. If you figure it out please do tell. Thanks and good luck.

    Japanese Maple Air Layer

Opened mine today. No roots. I think it's done. There was one lone root and it wasn't white so I'm assuming it's dead.

    A (Humble) Maple Progression

Nice! Potential for sure. I love Japanese maples. I've been growing some in the ground but I've been chopping them every year so far trying to keep the taper without huge scars. Maybe I should do like you and let them grow unchecked for a few years.

    My dogwood

That's a nice looking tree so far. Def potential there. I've often wondered about dogwoods. One of my favorite trees but I don't see much of them in bonsai. I wanted to try my hand at one. After seeing what you've done I'm even more inspired. My question is about the leaves though. How far will...

    Japanese Maple Air Layer

By the way I used a pot w a mix of perlite and moss. I hope I haven't been keeping it too wet. But I'm away at long intervals during the day and it's really sunny and hot in my backyard so I give them really good drinks to make sure they don't dry out during the day.

    Japanese Maple Air Layer

Well I just wrapped it back up and kept it wet. I haven't checked it. The leaves have been a little scorched but I dont think that's necessarily related to the layering. I think maybe I'll check it later this evening or tomorrow afternoon. I just wanted to leave it alone for now and see what...

    Heat wave question

Lol. My original intent was to keep it out of the sun completely. Where they are now they will see some sun Tom morning but hopefully not too long. I should be back by the evening and I watered them pretty well. I'll post return pics. Thanks everyone.

    Heat wave question

Ended up tucking them under a small Japanese maple in the back. There's some morning sun but I think they'll be ok. Thanks.

    Heat wave question

I have a plan! I think I'm going to water it well like everyone said and then place it against the house w an old kiddie pool placed in front of it to block the sun but still allow air circulation. I'll post a pic of the setup when I do it.

    Heat wave question

No I haven't left yet. Not leaving till around noon at the "official" start of the weather advisory according to local authorities. I'm still debating what to do. I was considering just watering the heck out of it but don't want to drown it. The layer itself was struck in potting soil because...

Few photos from the back yard

Thanks for responding Brian. When I see a lot you guy's (gal's Judy) I always wonder how long it took to build up to that many impressive trees. This is my second official year and I feel like I don't really have anything to show for it! Lol but seeing the stuff around here always renews my...

Brian can I ask how long you've been in the hobby? You're stuff is really quite impressive. Lance you also have some nice trees? Do you guys grow them all out from pre bonsai material or do you buy "finished" trees sometimes?

    Heat wave question

Hello everyone. Im going away tomorrow until Monday evening. And of course we are facing a heat wave in my area with a warning for excessive heat from tomorrow afternoon until Monday evening. I just separated a layer and I feel like it's already struggling slightly. I don't want to leave it in...

    my 1st successful air layer!

Congratulations! I had my first layer throw roots this season as well. I separated it but I'm a little nervous as to its survival. Did yours have any wilting or anything like that? It's been super hot the past few days here I'm hoping the heat doesn't kill it. I think you have some great...

    Separated a ground layer

What does poking holes do? I added a little bark to the granite today. I really hope this tree makes it. Of course the past few days all of a sudden are the hottest days of the year! Some of the leaves look stressed. I'm gonna keep it in shade w no sun for the next few days at least. Hopefully...

    Separated a ground layer

If it were going to drop leaves and turn black that would happen relatively quickly right?

    Japanese red maple help please.

May be late but like someone else said, just find the spot where you want it for life dig a hole amend a bit and plant it mulch it water it and leave it alone. You may need to water it every few days this season until it's established.

    Separated a ground layer

My main concern is that the roots won't grow into the crushed granite out of the soil since it's such a different medium.

    Separated a ground layer

New haircut. Eric the soil it's in now that's the actual rootball is just regular soil which worries me a little. The rest of the tub is filled in with crushed granite. Maybe I won't repot it instead just slip it out of the tub and into the raised bed for the winter over a board to keep the...
