    Which would you buy?

If it does not wring your bell don't give it a hammer. You could always cut the long straight trunk back, or your could layer it off, or you cut cut it short and jin the remains.

Do superb, famed and "national treasure" level bonsai...

If you are not continually rewiring, pruning and Pinching one of two things has happened: One, your tree is dead or Two, you have lost interest in the tree and it is now in decline.

Root Growth: Soil vs Bonsai Soil

Good grief Bill; there is no reason for you to be so fractious at this point. When you have something interesting and significant to say you have to learn to say it with a smile, or everybody will bury you under a load of crap.

What's it like to attend an Intensive program?

Just remember, you cannot pick up bonsai by osmosis, it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to details. I know of people who have taken an extensive program and instantly decided they had become a master by their presence at the event. They had suddenly acquired the skill, knowledge and...

I have 10 months to prepare for National Bonsai Examination

Believe me I know what it is like to have a dream and what it is like to have people dash it (the dream) to bits on the bitter rocks of truth. If these trees are the results of all of your work and hopes and you are hoping to turn this into a career as a bonsai master your current work wont...

    Underdogs Hinoki Challenger

You have only one viable choice with this tree. You know there is no way to get the growth in closer to the trunk by pinching it back and praying for back budding. You have to come to the conclusion as a given. If that is true the only way to get the growth in closer is to wire the branches...

Every thing is under snow and inaccessible. Be patient; no one wants to get at this tree more than I.

As far as I remember it is obtusa nanna. It can't be too much of a extreme cultivar I only paid $7.00 in 1994.

You're right it needs more aging, and a bonsai is never done till it's dead.

It is a Sara Raynor pot and I have not found anything that costs less than a Chevy that is appropriate to the tree but I am always looking.

    Dancing Lady Hinoki Cypress.

I have not written up a care guide that will not cause the locals to come for me with pitch forks and the such. The critical issue is keeping the new growth pinched back and yes I said Pinched.

To bury or not to bury?

You're thinking in the worng direction. What you need to do is encourage new growth to break bud just above the twisty trunk and even on the twist and grow the tree from there, removing the straight and boring top of the tree.

    Chamaecyparis Pisifera 'Filifera Aurea'

Caution: These trees do not back bud reliably on old wood. It is important that you constantly reduce the foliage back into the branch as opposed to allowing it to extend outward. If you don't pay attention to this in a number of years you will only have pom pom branches.,
