What to do about early bud break?

I've toyed with building a poly tunnel in the past. It is only a small number of trees, so I think I can do the back and forth shuffle between the shed overnight and benches during the day for the ones that have budded as needed based on the weather. All the other trees have moved out though.

What to do about early bud break?

This all makes sense and I appreciate the candid feedback from everyone. I think the hesitation I feel, and I know others feel, is that it is hard to test the limits. You can try to scale back watering or tweak fertilizer and see the results, but if you don't give appropriate winter protection...

What to do about early bud break?

Walking home today, I noticed some landscaping flowering cherries and forsythia had started blooming. The high 20s next week might be a bit rough on some of them.

What to do about early bud break?

Why do you stack the small trees on top of the larger ones? Is it just so they don't get lost/damaged with all the mulch?

What to do about early bud break?

I pull off all my flowers on the quince in development because I want it to save the energy to push out growth elsewhere.

Fun fact: they use that antifreeze component from fish to make low fat ice cream that tastes smooth and not icy.

What to do about early bud break?

I leave all my bigger trees outside on the ground, but the smaller ones I have in the shed. I'm not 100% sure what you mean by a 'proper cold greenhouse.' My setup for the smaller trees is a shed without windows and temperature controlled to prevent it from getting below freezing (heater kicks...

What to do about early bud break?

I said cold frame, but it is actually a shed with no windows and a temperature triggered heating element so it never goes below 32 degrees. It can get a little warmer than the ambient air though so I try to keep the door ajar during the day when I am home.

I don't believe they have gotten 1000 hours yet. Pretty confident they have not.

What to do about early bud break?

Hi All, In North Carolina, we have had some near record highs. It has been low 70s this week, but it is expected to get down to high 20s next week. Some of my trees (quince, beautyberry) have already started to leaf out despite being in a sun protected cold frame. This is a new experience...

Is the current bonsai instructional system broken?

Honestly, most of the numbers floated by folks about how much a bonsai professional should be paid seem pitifully low to me. Education at any level is expensive and usually gets more expensive the better trained the teacher. There are probably less than a dozen bonsai professionals based in...

I believe some professionals offer Skype session. I believe Bjorn has done some Skype sessions with a club member.

Is the current bonsai instructional system broken?

In a recent Mirai podcast, Walter Pall discusses how he gave up a career in consulting to pursue his passion in bonsai. He actually threw down some numbers and essentially he used to make more per hour in consulting than an entire day of bonsai workshops. Even for professionals, most shows and...

Is the current bonsai instructional system broken?

This is a pretty good book that definitely tries to dispel a number of commonly held 'truths.' The first that comes to mind is organic versus inorganic fertilizers. I've read it a few times and find that I get more out of it with more experience.

Is the current bonsai instructional system broken?

I strongly agree with this. Even having two divisions at a show (versus two separate shows) would be extremely helpful to build up the bench of people to get to the higher levels.

Is the current bonsai instructional system broken?

Reading between the lines and in my own experience, I think the big problems are 1) a lack of self-awareness of experience level, 2) non-targeted instruction and 3) the divide between deciduous and non-deciduous material. 1) Many early hobbyists think they are better than they are because 2-3...

That's a really interesting idea. I hadn't thought of sedum or creeping thyme. I'll have to investigate further. Does it hold up well to foot traffic?

New Bonsai Garden Display Progression Thread

New Years week means no work for me but the kids in daycare! I spent some time staining the pergola to match the fence and adding some decorative bases to some of the posts. They match the shed and the house. I think they make it look more formal and differentiate the pergola from the monkey...

Watering when overwintering in a shed or garage

Thanks. So you are just lightly watering really just to wet the soil and not heavily to flush everything through like during the growing season?

    Root oxygenation and container choice

Thanks. Presumably the depth of soil matters as well. A deeper pot will benefit more from gas capable of escaping above and below than a shallower pot will.

Watering when overwintering in a shed or garage

For those of you that overwinter your trees in a shed or garage, how do you do it without making a huge mess? Do you bring things outside to water thoroughly? Do you put some water barrier underneath and just lightly moisten to keep the substrate from drying out? I have shohin trees in a...
