    Fall color thread

It's a rubrum but that's as specific as I know. I got it from @Eric Group from SC, and it seems to be a different variety that the ones that grow in my yard. But I don't know if it's drummondi, trilobum or something else. I will definitely keep an eye on it. I want to take a better pic...

    Fall color thread

This maple is my best one so far. I feel like the yellow is going to get more orangey but we'll see what happens over the next few days.

    The Tree Thread

This is a pretty odd tree to begin with. I put these 2 maple seedlings together a few years ago with the idea of a twin trunk literatish type thingy. Turns out one has red fall color and one has yellow which is another check mark on the odd list I think.

    Garage vs. ground

I've kept all my deciduous trees in my attached garage for the last 5 winters or so with no issues. They usually come in around Thanksgiving and sit on metal shelves off the floor. I leave the window open behind them to keep it colder in there. It will go above 40 at times but not long enough...

This is one my favorite trees that I have seen on the site ever. It's right up there with @ABCarve 's Eastern Hemlock. I think I mentioned this one other time, but the only little thing that I see is that second pad of foliage on the left tree. To me, I think it would look nice if that...

    Welcome visitors to the garden

Was out watering in the dark this morning and caught this little guy in my Japanese Maple pot. Picture lit by head lamp.

    Hose head

I use the cheap multi function one too. I like having a mist, jet and shower function. I use the shower function for watering trees. Works great as long as I remember to not leave it outside in freezing weather. After that it's junk and time for a new one

    Fish Stories

If I'm not mistaken, those CFO reels were made by Hardy for Orvis. I could be wrong about that though. Either way, it's a nice reel. My Orvis rod was also rated for a 6 and I liked it with a 5. Miss that rod.

    Fish Stories

Nice tackle. Is that a Hardy on an Orvis rod? I had a 99 that was a great little spring creek rod but I splintered the tip a few years ago. I have a small collection of bamboo rods that I fish often. Mostly W&M Granger and a couple others. And 3 Hardy reels. I bought 2 Bougle's back in my...

It wasn't in the garden. It was in my garage.

    Species snobbery

Don't know yet. I started with a seedling yanked from my flower bed last year. I grew it in a pond basket in 2018 and a big grow box in 2019. It's about 6' tall now with about a 1.5" trunk. I figure I need at least a 4 to 6" trunk before I can even think about the leaves. Based on the size...

    Species snobbery

I kinda agree about the tree/shrub thing although I have some azaleas, juniper and dwarf crapes that are shrubs. The actual trees just float my boat a little more. But I don't limit myself to just a few species. That would be boring for me. There's Japanese maple, trident maple, amur maple...

    Welcome visitors to the garden

They may be good at rodent control but there are other methods for that. I'll leave them alone and give a wide berth out in the woods, but as soon as they take up residence in my garage, they get the shovel.

    Welcome visitors to the garden

Had a very unwelcome visitor last night. Went to take the dog out right at dusk and found a copperhead in my garage. He didn't last long. Has me on high alert around the garden now though.

Who are you? The Human side of Bonsai

I was a highwayman Along the coach roads I did ride With sword and pistol by my side Many a young maid lost her baubles to my trade Many a soldier shed his lifeblood on my blade The bastards hung me in the spring of twenty-five But I am still alive

How do you remove your wire?

Beagle. His breath isn't much better.

How do you remove your wire?

Too much trouble. I hold the tree behind my dog's ass and let him fart on it. Melts the wire right off. Also works for summer defoliation and clearing up clogged sinuses.

Working out the age of trees

I think that's how Andy Smith arrives at his estimates. He's core sampled a shit load of trees in his work and can make a pretty educated guess about collected trees. Not that it really matters anyway, but I tend to trust his numbers. An interesting thing happened to me this weekend at my...

    My Purple Cow

My guess is that it was the cold. I've definitely experienced die off of fine twigs from winter. And I protect mine in the garage. Northern VA is pretty much the northern limit for trees in the ground right? I've had landscape trees take several years to get established even here in Central...

    Bonsai Pictures Critique/Feedback Welcome

I started out with trees on my deck too and ended up moving them. It built up a nice, slick coat of green algae from the watering. It was very easy to fall on that stuff.

    The Tree Thread

The Richmond club is having their Fall show this weekend and I've decided to take these 3 trees. I just finished cleaning up the trunks and putting moss in the pots. Not the best moss, but it's what I could find. It will be the 1st time I've showed my trees to anyone but my family, a few...

    The Tree Thread

My wife and I just visited the botanical gardens in Richmond yesterday and I was admiring a full grown arakawa. It was impressive. But probably not as impressive as your bonsai. In the process of developing a 2nd trunk on this elm to add interest to a boring tree.
