The origin of Tiger Bark, Kinmen, Golden Gate and Kingman ficus names

For us who likes to grow ficus, there are confusing names like Kinmen, Tiger Bark, Golden Gate, Kingman etc., which sound like they are different cultivars. Actually, they all refer to only one cultivar of Ficus microcarpa which as a species is quite variable. The history of its discovery and...

    Satsuki Azalea with yellow-ish leaves

You have iron and magnesium deficiencies. Plants have difficulties taking in these two micronutrients from roots in alkaline soil. I foliar spray mine with Epsom salt solution, 2 tablespoons/gallon of water; or with Fertilome chelated iron/acidifier solution.

    Satsuki Azalea After-Flower Maintenance

First photo, two shoots pushed out from this year’s cut-back. Second photo, the newly grown shoots were pruned leaving two leaves on each shoot. It is safe to do such pruning even for our very hot zone 9 weather as long as I leave a pair of leaves after pruning.

    Satsuki Azalea After-Flower Maintenance

Hard to suggest whether it is OK to prune your newly acquired satsuki without knowing more about their backgrounds such as how healthy they are, are they newly imported trees or well established trees etc.. For a healthy tree, you can always prune to two shoots and stop there, or continue and...

    Satsuki Azalea After-Flower Maintenance

I put those two blogs on Facebook Azalea for Bonsai pages. Those might be the ones you saw. In your cooler zone, it is a good time to prune back as azalea puts out a strong growth after flowering.

    Satsuki Azalea After-Flower Maintenance

Azaleas look best when they are in full blooms. After flowerings, there are quite a lot of maintenance works to do: removing the flowers, cutting back the growing branches to two shoots and two leaves, redirecting new growths and fertilizing the tree. I wrote two blogs detailing why we do...

    The starter Ficus repository!

I grafted two seedlings on the left side in the photo, and two aerial roots on the right. Just nail them to where you want the graft to take place and wrap the graft tightly. They will fuse in about a year. No need to scrape the bark and line cambium to cambium. You can do that too if you do not...

    The starter Ficus repository!

Hemmy, This is a ficus I defoliated last week and wired the branches into shape, no detail wiring. I have been growing this one for about 18 years, the root base is 15 inches and is still expanding with all the new grafts. Height is 28" and width is 38". I restyled this sometimes ago and removed...

    The starter Ficus repository!

Glad that it helps. No, you do not want to move to somewhere hotter! It's is so hot here that sometimes I just don't feel like going out working on the trees. CA weather might be even better for growing ficus. When it comes to ficus in a pot, it is not necessary we get longer growing season with...

    The starter Ficus repository!

Hello Hemmy, Sorry for the late reply, have been away for awhile and just found your post. To grow a bigger trunk in broad-leave trees, one would normally let the center leader grows wild. It is called a whip. You may keep some lower branches near the base you want to help in thickening...

Chinzan Satsuki azalea in our spring show

Yes, I struggled whether I should swap positions of the Chinzan and Chinese elm with respect to how the trunk directions coming out of the pot. When I did that, it somehow did not look right when viewed in person. A friend also thought so. I think It is because Chinzan’s top leans to the left...

Chinzan Satsuki azalea in our spring show

I displayed this Chinzan azalea in our April 20 Lone Star State show. The flowers were already past their peaks, about half of them remained. After the show, I removed all the flowers, cut back branches and removed some leaves, and began to fertilize.

    Wakaebisu Satsuki azalea in bloom

My Wakaebisu Satsuki azaleas are in full blooms. Both were grown from gallon nursery stocks. Indoor lighting is harsh and distort their colors, the flowers are closer to salmon pink colors. First tree is 19" tall, second tree is 15" tall.

Satsuki Azalea "wakaebisu", Chinzan" and "kobai"

Two years ago our show was on May 14-15, I put ice-packs on pot surface to delay the blooms. It seemed to work. Instead of the normal full bloom in late April or first week of May, blooming was delayed. First picture was on May 1, second picture was on May 16.
