Any suggestions on the process of building foliage pads. I get the 2d nature of it, fan out the branch tips, but eventually that will result in a bare middle with leaves at the periphery. Im missing the 3d nature/vertical component. Here is a maple recently wired.

What if you applied a wire tourniquet at the orange line. That should prevent the incoming root from enlarging further, near the trunk at least (thus limiting further focal swelling at the trunk). It should gradually cut off the incoming root and i can just wait until the graft is significantly...

Also, here is an approach graft I performed earlier this year. It is easier to manage, I will just wait until the exiting limb is thicker than where it enters.

Interestingly, I repotted a white chojubai on the same day, and it never skipped a beat. I repotted a very large contorted quince the same day, and it also dropped nearly every leaf (fortunately, it is also slowly coming back.)

Repotting really made the quince angry. It decided to drop almost all of its leaves. I’ve taken special care of it since, and fortunately it’s coming back.

Thought I would update on what I did. I went with rock number 1. The roots seemed to match best with the groves in that stone. Weather is supposed to be 80 or less for the next few weeks so I thought timing would be good. Used spagnum ho hold primary roots where i wanted them. Here it is...
