Leveling an Oval Pot - advice appreciated

Have you determined when the inaccuracies have occurred in your process? It could happen when you wire it off the batt or pulling it into an oval. It doesn’t take much to go askew. Personally, from here it doesn’t look too bad.😎 The geometry of the wall (concave convex) can make it worse. In...

    Daiza carving

So I'm sitting around watching clay dry.........another winter daiza interlude! This stone was brought to me to replace its current daiza that the owner had carved for him a number of years ago. It works just fine, however, the owner wanted it set in a totally different direction. This is shown...

Building a wet slab bonsai pot

This is a copy of an antique pot that I found interesting enough to make a new one. Not my usual MO. I altered the proportions a bit. The geometry of the pot didn't lend itself to my current technique so a hybrid process was used. WHAT A PITA!!! It's a little busy looking but I think I have a...

Dumb question: Hand carry a bonsai from Japan?

You may want to try using an agent who already has the experience and credentials. I have a pal that imports trees for himself ( using agent) and it’s crazy expensive.

    32 year old Acer Rubrum

Well just got it out of storage to see how the new pot may look. That's a tough one.....it happens so slowly you don't really notice. It's kind of like watching your hair turn gray. All of a sudden......there you are.

    Flowers 2023

Thanks for posting this. I think this may be the same variety as mine. It has branched quite well. It started flowering in mid July and is still going. The flowers are relatively small compared to other phrags. I think I can put a name to it now.

Any solar power experts around ?

I had a 22Kw array installed last May and I’m still learning. The array is running my house and my studio. Pennsylvania has “net-metering”, which means when you produce more power than you use the power company banks those extra KW for you so you can draw on that when you use more than you make...

    Firing Unglazed Containers

When I was in college with him, he was in his mid-40s (1972-76) and he was foolin’ with those same glazes. We all asked, “hey, who’s the old guy”. When I went back to school to reintroduce myself to ceramics I was 55. I can only speculate on what my fellow students were pondering. Bills glazes...

    Firing Unglazed Containers

This is a guy I went to university with, Bill Campbell. His pottery was sold around the world and he had 30 employees. He too, only single fired. He used electric kilns and would soak for hours a max temperature to insure off-gasping. https://www.tidelinegallery.com/fpottery/billcampbell.html...

This article is about reduction (gas) firing but he does oxidation (electric) these days. I love his work...

Leveling an Oval Pot - advice appreciated

Throwing is not my forte but I have done it a number of times with success. You may want to post a video of your technique so that others will see how and why the distortion is happening. There are many ways to skin a cat and picture (video) is worth a thousand words.

    Adventure into the avant-garde

Before and after!! I’m liking purple this year. These are the same three glazes used on the last pot only used in different proportions.

Building a wet slab bonsai pot

First kiln load out. Couldn’t resist posting the new purple. This was a test pot. The big one in the next load. @Carol 83 I think this one might be too big for you. 12” x 8-1/2” inside dimension.

    Hornbeam Direction Thoughts

I like the tall chop. American hornbeam leaves don’t reduce enough to make the small chop a believable shohin. I have been trying to make one for quite a while and this spring mine is going into a larger pot. This one is currently 9” high from the soil line.

    Witch hazel ground layer

Not sure if this was a good idea (letting it bloom) to let it use energy on the flowers when it could use it for pushing new roots. @0soyoung . I could have cut them off when they were emerging, but…..WTH. The approach graft took quite well which is first time I had one fuse in one growing...

Why is it impossible to find a show worthy princess persimmon for sale????

I think a pal in my study group has one for sale if he hasn’t already sold it. It needs some work but has good potential. I’ll pm you photos and price if he still has it. I know it has fruited.
