What's the largest air-layer you have ever successfully done?

I separated elm layered from the forest. It's about 1,5 meters high.

Can you give me a precise, accurate definition for the term literati bonsai?

I heard Walter Pall say several times that, in his opinion, literati are sort of naturalistic trees. During the workshop with him, when he was standing next to a pine tree which Andrija Zokic later styled, I asked him why he thinks so. You can find some of his ideas about literati in this video...

Questions on Propagating Tilia cordata (Small-Leaf Linden)

Tried hardwood cuttings and always failed. Did air layering, and it worked well. If you have some tree where you can secure layering bag on good spot, you can have couple of inches thick tree in few weeks.

    My neighbors tree fell over…

Lucky you. That tree is massive; it could have caused a lot more damage. Personally, would curse as a sailor at my neighbour being it were my situation.

I guess I'm a snob---- the reverse kind

This is an interesting thought line for me. A lot of us think about achieving desired results with our trees either fast or possible within a single person's lifetime. And we compare our trees to products of 2-3 generations of work on asian trees. If we accept that, due to age or health...

A bonsai you designed on your own

Both coruns species grown in my garden (mas and sanquinea) are reducing leaves quite significantly. Pictures are at least a month old, the color change was even stronger later.

A bonsai you designed on your own

Cornus sanquinea from cuttings, a few years in making, approximately 4-5. Great color of the trunks, and foliage, foliage is tiny compared to mature trees. Cuttings were stuck into a container, surprisingly survived, and as they were together, I transferred them into a cheap Chinese pot for...

Thanks, Clem. Neither Jennifer's trees were easy. A lot of work, tedious wiring, and tough design decisions. Those kinds of trees are causing a lot of controversy, but this kind of material is exactly what she is looking for. And she puts a lot of energy into styling. Regarding Andija Zokic...

So, here is the summary of all trees we filmed during the Masterclass with Walter Pall in Bonsai Moravia nursery of Lukas Sirotny two weeks ago. Each tree has its own video. You may find information there interesting, a lot of discussions about the initial styling of the yamadori material, about...

    Another BIG American Hornbeam thread.

I'm not sure if I understand your question correctly. But from my perspective, generally, more movement is better than no movement in branching. And tapering in branches is very hard to build subsequently when the branch is already too long. You can change the initial diameter of the branch with...

What would you do with these Japanese Maple cuttings?

Faced a similar scenario with Arakawa two years ago. I stored them in the garage, on the window. Cool but not freezing, a lot of light. Four out of 12 survived. Also stored a lot of not potted cuttings rooted in plastic boxes in a dark, cold cellar, temperatures above zero all the time, no...

It is just a garden center plant purchased a few years back. I saw it flowering in the shop and I just couldn't resist. The tree was originally in an extremely large pot (30-40L), now in this pot temporarily. I'm thinking about repotting it into a much smaller, round pot next spring. Here are a...
