    Wood shavings for airlayering?

I appreciate the responses folks. It was just a thought. I'll just keep doing what I have been.

    Wood shavings for airlayering?

Hey all. I'm working on a maple walking stick, using a Microplane "file". I'm looking at the shavings and wondering if I can use this as a soil medium for airlayering instead of sphagnum moss? The wood has been drying for a year or so. I also have some apple, cherry, and elm that I cut a couple...

    Tree identification

That looks like a young Hickory, in my humble opinion

    Azalea deadwood.

Edit: I ripped the dead stuff away and I am left with this. I was going to lose it down the road anyway and figured it just slowing the drying process. The hollow goes all the way down. I'm going to leave it facing the sun for a couple days and see what happens.

    Azalea deadwood.

This is not a discussion about whether or not it should be there, for this tree it is there. This is one of the first trees I "collected" when I first started so I have a slight sentimental attachment to it. By my rough estimation it is around 40 years old. This rotted out section is not my...

    Big Crabapple collecting

Exactly why I asked Sorce. Why take it if it isn't worth it. My intentions are create beautiful trees, not to torture them to a long slow death.

    Big Crabapple collecting

I have some already. Why pass up on 15+ years of work if it was viable?

    Big Crabapple collecting

Thanks for your responses. You all touched on every one of my concerns. I'm hoping for the 4in or so. If it is too big I will have some wood for carving and grilling.

    Collecting 2020

A massive euonymus allatus. This thing was 15+ tall. Currently sitting about 6ft tall. We'll wait and see what happens

    Collecting 2020

An Ulmus Americana I chopped about 10 years ago and forgot about. I wish I had moved it years ago. I don't know if this one will survive, but it was free. I did some carving and will let nature take over for now. It is almost 5 ft tall and I'm not sure where it is heading.

A crabapple that got broken somehow. The branches on the left will be the new trunk.

    Big Crabapple collecting

Hi all. A landscaper I met recently is taking out a crabapple tomorrow and has offered it to me. I have not seen it yet, but his account it is, "...probably 12in or more at the flare." I have asked for a picture, but since it free I'm taking it anyway. Our agreement is to give him a piece of any...

Some really great looking trees! This is my little Buxus 'Morris Midget'.

Will windswept suit this Chinese Elm?

If you airlayer the top half you'd have two trees that you can work with and not have the "S" curve anymore.

    Chaenomeles questions

Thanks for your input Dick. I went ahead and re-potted it. I was able to seperate three "trunks" out of the clump. I potted two of them and put one in the garden. I also took a couple of cuttings. So far all seem to be doning well.

Jim, do you take any extra precautions after re-potting?

    Chaenomeles questions

I picked up a 'Texas Scarlet' yesterday from the bargain bin of a nursery. It has some size to the base (compared to the others I've seen) and maybe three plants. I did trim it up a little, mainly removing suckers and branches I didn't like. It has some leaves on it now, unfortunately no...

Weird question, is it just me...

I talk to my plants, and sing sometimes. The singing probably does more harm than good though. I also let them listen to music, which I swear they like.

Best time for Acer p. cuttings?

Thanks for the quick responses guys/gals. What I will probably do then is try to strike one as a cutting and airlayer the other.

Best time for Acer p. cuttings?

When would the best time to try to root Acer p. cuttings? The variety in question is 'Mikawa Yatsubusa'. I have read that some varieties don't strike roots easily, is this one of them? Would I have better luck trying to airlayer? I have three, two of which I would like to remove parts of.

A Murmuration of Starlings (and other reasons why it's better to be outside)

Had what i believe, after watching that video, to be a murmuration in the oak trees this morning. The squawking was pretty loud and reminded me of a scene form 'The Birds", except for them not being gulls. One Black Cat firecracker and they all took off, I could feel the wind from their wings...

    paper pots

Thanks Will. The feet stayed behind when I pulled them from the mold. I think they were too small (1/2x1in) and just didnt have enough hold with the mix still being too being wet. Future feet will be bigger, the mix will have more concrete in it, and I'll leave them in the molds for longer.

    paper pots

Here are the first 3 successful extractions from the molds. I've lost a couple due to too much paper in the mix or not letting them cure long enough. The first two did lose their feet however. First is about 7x5 1/2x1in and the second is about 9x6 1/2x2in (inside dimensions) third is about...

Black Olive sap sucker/borer issue, non bonsai

Thank you Judy. I passed the suggestion on to my friend and also recommended they consult a 'tree doctor'.
