    Fallen Ficus !!

Not quite yet Ed! I meant I don't comment on another person's thread much when I don't have a question or something to contribute. Making your own thread and posting progressions is not "post monger" type behavior in the least. It is nice to see what other people are working on and trying...

    Fallen Ficus !!

Neat idea with the bottle. I hope it works out for you and it turns out looking like you imagine. How warm does it stay near this tree? I know roots grow much much faster when there is humidity(check) and ample heat(?). Good for you for posting. I don't always comment on things because I...

    Net Pots

Mighty fine answer. Your assumptions were fairly accurate. Different purposes for different tools.

    Net Pots

Now my question is.....This would not be good for trees that one would want to grow out because it would rob the tree of maximum top growth?

    Net Pots

Yes. Yes. Usually unless you want trunk size instead of root development. Yes.

    Hornbeam gone wild

This is one of those inspirational trees that makes you want to go wire anything in sight. Including plastic house plants. If you have the time maybe you could take a photo of this tree from the top down? The photos on the blog of some of the branches that are top down are kinda neat.

To reduce or not to reduce? (crabapple)

I must default to Stan's initial assessment. Doing much more to this tree right now might be too much. Even the chop would be drastic for a newly field dug tree. An air-layer is going to rob a considerable amount of energy that would otherwise being going into the mother tree's root system...

To reduce or not to reduce? (crabapple)

Full Sun? You might find this thread of JudyB's enlightening as well because it is all crab advice. And a nice tree.

To reduce or not to reduce? (crabapple)

Correct. Sorry I edited my post while you posted and answered more directly. But you seem to get it.

To reduce or not to reduce? (crabapple)

If you don't mind I would suggest you read this article by Brent Walston. Growing Large Trunks for Bonsai Here is an excerpt from that article that will hopefully answer your question about sacrifice branches. "Use sacrifice branches and leaders to correct a problem when your tree already...

Fair enough. Now I am tempted to fertilize(org) and just prune mercilessly. Appreciate your guidance.

Where is a good place to find a crab apple bonsai in southern California?

    1. It is already suffered a pretty horrific day. Don't you think? 2. What did they use at House of Bonsai? Something special or just some pruners and a saw?

    Azaela Spring Development Question

Since I cannot find the thread that has the answer I will ask for the answer, or the path to the answer about deflowering Azaleas in development. I remember that someone shared some wisdom about training techniques of azaleas before but I can't find it! Since I see flower buds starting to...

Where is a good place to find a crab apple bonsai in southern California?

To my understanding the tree will need a minimum number of chill hours depending on type to set fruit. Might not bloom if you don't get the minimum amount. Which makes me very sad because I really enjoy them and mine has yet to bloom when it probably should have. But that doesn't mean you...

    Plant ID, What is this.

Those leaves look pretty beat up. The leaves on my luma a. are all pretty flat with just a little arch. Bounces back fast and takes abuse very well, it seems to never stop putting out shoots where I am. I also am looking forward to the direction you take.

Hesse Cotoneaster I got in November.

Somehow I can't help but feel that you might become bored with this very quickly. But this is a nothing ventured nothing gained type tree. Consider what type of trees you could emulate with the material. Most cotoneaster are broad-headed trees that fit into the small category. Branching will...

    trident root cutting

Is this just a question of timing with latent buds and/or cell differentiation? If it the stock was dormant then wouldn't those roots be storing energy to push buds, despite being wounded?

    Lantana root over rock

I think perhaps you just might have been conned my good sir. Just think. See spots her mark (thats you with your lovely Lantana) and convinces you that your plant would look just peaches in her decor. Suddenly you agree and out of the depths of your good soul you return her pot, with the...
