    next year's project - suggestions?

i think its worth collecting...i also think this looks better than the standard s shape you're referring to. If you chop it after the second bend you can wire a leader so it loses the s shape. If you don't like it you can ship it to me!

    next year's project - suggestions?

if i came across a root spread like that i would think it would have decent roots under the dirt...however if you are going to trench i would only do half...if you are going to trench the entire thing at once might as well take it with you...personally if i saw this i would just get a big enough...

    Holy Crape!

JKL and JohnG, I actually use this technique that you described with privet because they have a similar growth pattern as crape myrtles. Thank you for the long description but i don't think its wrong for someone to do their own thing...that's how new techniques get discovered right? Not trying...

    Semi Cascade Wisteria

the base is about 2 inches or so...and wisteria will survive if you get some roots they don't necessarily need a bunch. This one just happened to have a lot...i did prune them back to fit in the pot and it sprouted in less than a week. They are fun to grow because they grow so fast. if i were...

    Antelope bitterbrush, Purshia tridentata

    Antelope bitterbrush, Purshia tridentata

what i try to do if a plant seems harder to collect is to trench out half of the roots one year and back fill with garden soil or even bonsai soil and then the next year do the same to the other side and depending on how fast they put out new roots you can collect it the following year or...

    Pussy willow project

for now that is a good plan until you have something to work with. Maybe wire branches when they are young and put a lot of movement into them while they are very soft.

    Pussy willow project

oh...im growing some cuttings out just curious. I don't let aggressiveness bother me. I actually love growing wisteria so i guess im different. I like a fast growing tree. You can usually slow them down over time and in smaller bonsai pots. If aggressiveness is all thats bad then ill take my...

    Pussy willow project

if i chose this species to make a bonsai i would aim towards a design to show off the flowers like a weeping or cascade or semi-cascade. This probably wouldnt be a good choice for say a masculine type tree with big thick trunk and such. More of a enjoy the flowers then hide it...like wisteria in...
