    Butchering up some Alberta Spruce.

Hoping for a 'old' forest for endless amount of wiring practise. These were on sale at a box store relatively cheap. Not to much to be excited about here but thought I'd give it a try. Minimal wiring done just looking for survival at this point. I'll carve and wire lots more later on. I can't...

    My Box Store Mugo #2

More of the traditional tight growth shrub style in a 2G container: Picked it for a base with what I thought had a little character. You can see the pie cut at bottom right. This soil was moist and quite woody with a loose root ball. Two pie cuts, tried to leave the root ball alone as best...

    My Box Store Mugo

It was called a 'Big Tuna' Mugo, not much really going for it. I picked it because it did have a fatter base and looked healthy. So here is my chop and repot pictures: -getting in there and chopping I noticed a ton of mini spiders, not like a spidemite. Blasted them off with water then...

Good Walter Pall J.Maple Refurbishing blog.

http://walter-pall-bonsai.blogspot.ca/2013/02/refurbishing-japanese-maple-hedge.html I thought this was an interesting article, with a great looking tree in the end. Wasn't to shabby to start IMO but defiantly improved a lot in the progression. So is it really 'A' tree? Or a grouping/...

Kijiji pots for sale- what do you guys think?

http://calgary.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-sell-hobbies-crafts-BONSAI-POTS-W0QQAdIdZ437378617 (Hundreds of pots- asking 3000) I'm not very schooled on pots. From what I see looks like typical cheap, garden store variety pots? There are no bonsai stores in my city to go out of business? I suspect the...

    My Prized Olive Bonsai

I've been growing it from seed, this is year five I think? I cut it back hard after this pic and it's really thickened up it's now the size of a pencil! Any styling tips? It's back inside with my other prized sticks for the winter flourishing. It's the one in one of my cherished bonsai pots.

    Amur Maples

Here is a good reason why I don't post many tree pics... These are my home depot trees that will all be chopped harder. Some very hard, short cone method, I believe it's called. Others not so hard, I have a few more along these lines and then some in the ground doing the same methods. Years...

'Wild For Bonsai' ABS collecting booklet.

There is a great booklet on collecting at the ABS from Andrew Smith of Golden Arrow Bonsai. I'd say a must have for anyone just getting into collecting or needing some pointers for success, if your a seasoned collector it's pretty basic knowledge but still a great little read. It's mostly but...

I'm sure most of you have been hearing it for a while and it has been discussed in the Bnut before I think? Here is another article saying Lime Sulfur is going away: (on Bonsaibark by Colin Lewis) http://bonsaibark.com/2012/01/09/weekly-wire-the-end-of-lime-sulfur/ It is followed by a...

    Krumholtz?

Krummholz or Krumholtz formation (German: krumm, "crooked, bent, twisted" and Holz, "wood") Have many heard the term? I have not. I was discussing Bonsai with a Alpine guide buddy. He said it is snow industry term from german guides, they always like the Canadian Krumholtz. His translation...

    My Collected Spruce and Fir

Here are some of the trees I collected this summer along with some location shots. Very late spring and summer, as in most the North West. It's still possible to collect now in the high alpine. These are from the Golden BC area in the high alpine 2743m (9000ft.) I frequently snowmobile this...

    Carrigana as bonsai?

Caragana as bonsai? In my yard I have a area with a couple dozen plus caragana tree/shrubs. They grow like mad and are 10 -15 feet tall, multi trunked in clusters of various trunk sizes up to 3 - 4 inches thick. I'm planning on removing them to make space for more bonsai benches, stands and...

    How do you sift?

The 'do you sift' thread and the cement mixer idea has me thinking and exploring a better way for sifting. In the past I'd wash out the fines with a normal kitchen mesh strainer (low volume), been using a store bought cheap chinese sifter and it is worthless, dusty forearm workout. Lets hear...

    Organic soil additive

I have all my soil components except in my area I'm can never find a great choice for my organic portion of 10% or less, ideally I'd like to use Soil-pep (composted pine mulch) but it seems not to be available in Canada. My next choice that I can find would be a packaged orchid mulch mix but...
