    Pine Identification and advice

I killed one once. It was a baby. Here is one from last month:

I'm pretty sure that's from the flash. The day time photo is a better representation of the needle color.

    Scots Pine finally recovering

This tree was nursery material that was worked hard in summer of 2013. I think it's just now starting to look strong particularly in terms of having multiple buds. I cut off the bottom of the rootball Fall 2015. The interior is bare and it needs to be wired. Should I do some bud selection...

    Pine Identification and advice

I purchased this pine fall 2015 and the candles really took off while I was looking the other way. Embarrassingly... I'm not even sure what type of pine it is so it's probably not a surprise that I'm not sure what to do. It is really thick so I think it needs some thinning. I haven't done...

Here is how they turned out (images are linked):

2 elms in ground need chopping

They've been in the ground for 3 years or so. Thanks for the virtual image Tieball. I think I will cut off that large trunk. Here's some more photos. (Click photo for the huge version) The Hillier elm has a really messed up trunk.

Should I just let this maple keep growing?

A couple of years at least, but it's been growing 4 or 5 all together I think. It started as a one year old seedling in a small nursery can and I cut the tap root and put it on a tile in the grow bed. This is the advice I want to listen to because it's what I was leaning toward doing. I...

Should I just let this maple keep growing?

Does this maple need some pruning work or should I just let it keep growing? I'd like it to be thicker but I also would like to see more lower branches.

2 elms in ground need chopping

I could use some advice on what to do with 2 elms that have been growing in the ground for awhile. I'm not sure what type this first one is. I feel like I let the large right trunk get to big but I kind of want to leave it so there isn't a huge scar. Should I shorten both trunks and just...

Cut back a maple... top fizzled out

After googling Pseudomonas and looking at some photos it doesn't really look like that to me. I don't really see much black. They are linked images if it helps for a closer look (sorry if you already did). I was thinking the tree seemed pretty healthy below where it died back to. The cuts...

Cut back a maple... top fizzled out

I cut back a Japanese maple this spring and repotted it. The top started to grow some leaves but they died off. I don't think the wood is totally dead. Maybe I should have pruned that side branch with all the leaves more aggressively? I was just going to let it grow and recover but is there...

    Western Juniper Creation Pruning

There are a few small roots. The plant is angled in such a way that they have some room to grow.

    Western Juniper Creation Pruning

I had planned on leaving it for a couple years but I got some help with the repot and it seemed at the time the best plan was to get it out of the clay and to start developing some roots on the side where there are nearly none. It wasn't completely bare rooted and the lump in the middle is...

Large tree with no roots near surface.

Thanks for your thoughts on this every one. I couldn't find any more pictures of it, though I thought I had taken some more. Next time I'm in the area it's growing I hope to get some more pictures of the trunk beneath the soil to show what I mean more exactly. I like this tree a lot so I...

Large tree with no roots near surface.

It looks like only a trench because it's from last year but I totally dug it out and know there aren't any hidden roots.

Large tree with no roots near surface.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear. I am the one that did the digging around the tree in the fall of 2013 and did a thorough underground exploration and there weren't any roots for at least two feet down and I don't mean two feet down from the first branch but from the surface level of dirt.

Large tree with no roots near surface.

This tree caught my eye and I investigated the base and found that there was a lot of buried trunk before any roots were present. Is it possible to ground layer something like this? Click for big:

    Pine branch selection

Thanks for that virtual image Fourteener. I couldn't physically set it at that angle when leaning it on the concrete blocks for a photo. I know I titled the thread branch selection but part of the problem is I don't feel like there is that much selection especially considering most of my...

    Pine branch selection

    1. I would like to deal with those whorls soon but I can't decide what to cut. If I repot it this year should I wait until next year to remove branches? Should I wait to wire? 2. One of the low branches is already dead. I would like to remove part of the top but where exactly? Should...

    Western Juniper Creation Pruning

I was always planning on just feeding and letting it recover for the next couple of years. Unfortunately, I didn't give it any additional winter protection. Most of that growth is very new being from last year and some of it has popped this spring. Thanks for the advice every one.

    Pine branch selection

In a fit of panic I cut off the wire and left the tree alone while I wait for a clear sign from above. Nothing has come yet and I was thinking about re-potting soon. I'm a little worried the branches will need to be moved further if it is in an upright position and I'm really good at damaging...

    Western Juniper Creation Pruning

I chopped it back last fall and now it is waking up a bit this spring.

    Pine branch selection

Thanks for the advice. I think the literati form is probably the way to go. I could use more wiring practice so wiring out the branches is a good idea for that alone.

    Pine branch selection

Is this a scotch pine? I got it at a bonsai auction in 2011 and haven't really touched it since. It backbudded pretty well this year but the foliage is still pretty far from the trunk on several branches. The branches basically all come from two whorls and I'm worried if I reduce to a single...

    Western Juniper Creation Pruning

I've had this juniper growing on my back patio for about three years now and would like to bonsai it. I've never really done something on this scale before and wouldn't mind any and all advice. Should I top it and choose some branches all at once at the beginning of spring and then the next...
