Alright, here's the "damage" after round 1. I'm still not sure about the large, straight branch jutting upright from the bottom edge of the chop. Its boring and lacks buds until the top 10% of the branch. Its just such a large branch to remove! (I dunno why the pic is rotated)

It does take some time for the tree to respond, but in general I have found that I get a much better response when I completely defoliate as opposed to a partial defoliation.

HPS is most likely the wrong spectrum of light for . . . its far too red. You should get a metal halide instead (but don't just get a MH bulb! It won't work unless the ballast is designed to run both).

I'm in SoCal and I have to rotate my shimpaku daily to prevent scorching. Your tree however, does not sound like its getting burned (If anything, it may not be getting enough light). You may also be overwatering . . . hot and in the shade doesn't mean the soil is dry. I keep my shimpaku on...

Where do you live? When you repotted, how much of the roots did you trim? What kind of sun does this tree get? How often do you water it and how dry is the soil when you do water? Can you see any kind of bugs?

Different species of jade. Most are the large leaf variety, however, occasionally you'll find one that is a dwarf. There's a HUGE one down the street from me that I have been tempted to take a cutting or two from as I pass by.
