    Ficus Air layering question.

I'm in the process doin the same thing, although i used regular bonsai soil and an old small plastic pot (cut in half and wired around the layer). My only problem is that im in tampa where its been in the 80's and im having a problem keeping it moist.

    Winter Watering Schedule?

personally i dont keep to schedule, just whenever they seem to need it which is certainly less than summer. If your ever uncertain it helps just to move some of the topsoil aound with your finger. It should never be bone dry to far down.

Which books would one recommend for a beginner?

I would agree with kurt, these are the most informative and complete books out there. I have actually heard them called the old and new testament of Bonsai. Also they are expensive even the used copies but i guarantee you will be satisfied.

    Excessive Pruning Fines

I have to agree i think it looks silly when people hack the entire top off thier myrtles, very un-natural. Although a fine seems a bit accessive.

    Bahama Black Olive

Well i can't tell if the soil is covering up anything good, but personally from what i can see i would ground layer it and forget about the roots you have. However only you can determine that when you get a peek of what lies under the soil line and if it apeals to you keep it.

well i did some chopping today and repotted it. i was also able to remove the other tree pretty easy. i didn't chop it to far back yet because i wanted to leave some foliage in case it doesn't back bud as quick as i want it. i also planted the other tree in the yard to let it thicken up for a...
