Thanks Judy. I am led to believe that hawthorns are a little different from other deciduous trees insomuch as they must be pruned as soon as the shoots begin to lignify and before they turn woody. I have used this video as a guide (skip to 7 minutes):

Thanks dudes. I can't really take the credit though - the tree was styled at a workshop with Pavel Slovak. I will take some updated photos soon with something to give a better idea of scale. The type? Wild/yamadori collected by Pavel in the mountains near his home.

Thanks for the replies again. :D Another little update... I have recently done a little burning of the carved areas with a blowtorch to remove tool marks, and add some depth to the hollows.

A quick update. The hawthorn grew strongly over its first year, putting out 1 meter growth extensions. I have recently carried out the first work on the tree - reducing and carving any unwanted elements and smooth barked 'water shoots'. The tree as it looks today. Now waiting for...
