@BrianBay9, thanks for sharing your knowledge on the Coast Live Oaks. Do you have experience as to whether your process for the Coast Live Oak would also apply to other evergreen oaks such as Emory Oak, Scrub Oak, Arizona White Oak, Palmer Oak, etc, or for that matter a dry climate deciduous...

Here's an update on the Texas Scarlet above. Gave it a vigorous root prune and a repot in the fall. Pruned branches for structure. Added one piece of wire to change the direction of the main trunk more to my liking. Then left it pretty much alone. Growing fine, but it didn't flower for me this...

I'll be at the Phoenix Bonsai Society show tomorrow (Saturday April 2, 2022). Anyone else going to be there? David Nguy from Bonsai Jidai will be conducting morning workshops on both days and an afternoon demonstration on Saturday.

The phoenix has fully risen. Amazing. Kudos to you for sticking with it. I think it really is going to be a better tree than it was.

Here is an Emory Oak I just collected yesterday.

These three oaks were collected over the last several weeks. All are short on feeder roots unfortunately so we'll see how the do in the next few weeks as Spring comes on. They are Emory Oaks and Arizona White Oaks. They've been fully defoliated as in the first pic.

Why, yes, I would like to win that lovely little pot.

Thanks PaulH, and it sounds like you do complete defoliation as compared to leaving a bit of foliage at the ends of branches, is that correct? Thanks again for sharing your experience.

@rollwithak is correct, Arizona White Oak is evergreen (though I'm not completely sure that this tree isn't an Emory Oak, which is also evergreen). I thought about trying the black bag method anyway, but decided that would most likely just assault the tree with fungal infections. I'm keeping it...

Recently collected Arizona White Oak (Quercus Arizonica)... Waiting to see how it does this Spring - once I washed off the original soil I could see that it didn't have as much root system as I'd have liked. Time will tell.
