Coming along nicely. Thanks for the update. I saw all the brown needles and was worried about your tree for a second there and then I remembered it was a larch. Whew.

Master Discussion: Summer and Fall Collecting and Repotting

@BrianBay9, thanks for sharing your knowledge on the Coast Live Oaks. Do you have experience as to whether your process for the Coast Live Oak would also apply to other evergreen oaks such as Emory Oak, Scrub Oak, Arizona White Oak, Palmer Oak, etc, or for that matter a dry climate deciduous...

New Garden Center Texas Scarlet Quince

Here's an update on the Texas Scarlet above. Gave it a vigorous root prune and a repot in the fall. Pruned branches for structure. Added one piece of wire to change the direction of the main trunk more to my liking. Then left it pretty much alone. Growing fine, but it didn't flower for me this...

    The 2022 Yamadori/Collecting Thread

These three oaks were collected over the last several weeks. All are short on feeder roots unfortunately so we'll see how the do in the next few weeks as Spring comes on. They are Emory Oaks and Arizona White Oaks. They've been fully defoliated as in the first pic.

Show us your Oak (Quercus) Pre-Bonsai

Thanks PaulH, and it sounds like you do complete defoliation as compared to leaving a bit of foliage at the ends of branches, is that correct? Thanks again for sharing your experience.

Show us your Oak (Quercus) Pre-Bonsai

@rollwithak is correct, Arizona White Oak is evergreen (though I'm not completely sure that this tree isn't an Emory Oak, which is also evergreen). I thought about trying the black bag method anyway, but decided that would most likely just assault the tree with fungal infections. I'm keeping it...

Show us your Oak (Quercus) Pre-Bonsai

Recently collected Arizona White Oak (Quercus Arizonica)... Waiting to see how it does this Spring - once I washed off the original soil I could see that it didn't have as much root system as I'd have liked. Time will tell.

    Alligator juniper

Just ran across this thread and had to add to it. Alligator juniper is very common around where I live in Arizona's Prescott National Forest. From what I've been able to observe the blue needle foliage is juvenile form. Mature foliage is scale and a sea-green color. As others have noted, these...

Welcome to the Phoenix Bonsai Society club forum!

@AZbonsai, I definitely want to connect with the Phoenix Bonsai Society. I'm a recent transplant to Arizona living in Prescott and getting back into bonsai of late. Do you know of any other bonsai people in the Prescott area? Do you know if live club meetings and events will be going on this...

What will you do in 2022 to push your boundaries?

Successful collecting of native oaks and ponderosa pine (and wishing I had an experienced local person to show me how they do it). Increased patience, steadiness and consistency in tree care. Hardwood cuttings.

    Curl Leaf Mountain Mahogany Advice?

How did this tree do over the summer and fall this year? I've recently acquired a couple of small Mountain Mahogany and like you I can't find much information on the species as bonsai or in pot culture.
