A pet peeve of mine ....

is "Bonsai" also a verb? (I doubt it). My wife says "Your not going to Bonsai that shrub; let it alone!"

A pet peeve of mine ....

...and why does everyone have to repeat the word "is" twice when speaking? You may not have noticed, but you may now.

A pet peeve of mine ....

...and "spellcheck" will never catch this, as both are legitimate words.

    Grafting

the key is if the branch can be bent back on itself and survive, and you can find this out pretty easily by trying to bend any unneeded branch on the same or similar tree.

    Grafting

single-point graft may be the answer, IF you can bend the branch w/o breaking it.

    terra cotta

Refreshing to get to the actual answer here for me as well, as I use crushed brick exclusively as a substrate, and I expect it to act similar to a clay pot in CE exchange, (none).

    Bonsai shortcuts

Not really a shortcut if SOMEONE took the time to grow it, including nature (collected) you had to decide to collect it or buy it - good eye!

    Frustrated with bonsai ability

many of the books and seminar demonstrations deal with "refining" or "styling" a tree that's been pre-destined to be a bonsai. This doesn't help beginners like you (or me) learn how to take raw material and start developing it. I suggest looking at books and seminars dealing with raw collected...

    Frustrated with bonsai ability

you live about an hour from Nature's Way (I live in Dover). there's a meeting tonight (which I sadly cannot attend) the Susquehanna Bonsai club has members from at least as far as Williamsport and West Chester, PA. These people don't make it to every meeting; I'm sure they prioritize and...

    What are you working on?

I plan on collecting some pitch pines soon, and a large eastern red cedar that has been mowed but survived. I think these are some of the few trees that can be collected this time of year (according to Lenz)

    Bending Pines

Well, I’m going to have to try it now. I’ve got a Virginia Pine in the yard that I wired and bent, and didn’t remove the wire before it created serious inverse taper. How far apart should I space the rings? I’m thinking the spacing should be about the same as the diameter of the trunk, maybe...

    Collecting trees from wild care.

The best resource I know of is the book Bonsai from the Wild by Lenz. Unfortunately, he writes from the regional perspective of New England, and things will definitely be different in Florida. Still probably a good read for you.

    Collecting trees from wild care.

and different species should be collected at different times of the season.

To chop or not to chop?

BTW, it should probably be noted that here in PA things are just starting to warm up. Some of my collected maples (chopped @ collection) are just now growing leaves. It's been a long spring

To chop or not to chop?

You can chop now, but leave an inch or two from where that new growth comes out. I killed the top of my favorite Red Maple this spring by cutting/carving too close/too soon.

    Organic fertilizer, which, why?

I have looked at COMPOST TEA, but decided it is too much bother to make (aeration, etc)
