    Ponderosa Pine Candle Health

Because it's a newly collected and potted tree. I'll be backing off the watering now that it's growing again and moving it into full sun.

    Ponderosa Pine Candle Health

Here's what mine look like. It's been very warm and wet here so mine may have just taken off. It's in full shade and I've just been watering daily and spraying the foliage 2x a day.

    Ponderosa Pine Candle Health

I bought one from him this year too. When I first received it the new candles looked pale like that. They've since greened up and resumed growing in the past few weeks. How long have you had it?

    Collected Ponderosa Pine Questions

I'm pretty new to this also but I've cooked a few trees getting them out into full sun too early. I just bought a Ponderosa off Andy and he recommends waiting until needles on new candles on just collected and repotted trees are about 1" before getting them out into the sun.

east coaster looking for a palette of pumice

Picked up some of Josh's pumice over the weekend. It looks really nice. Probably 100% useable material. It shouldn't need any screening. Looking forward to getting some stuff planted in it. Josh, thanks again. Here's a pic if anyone else is interested. He has tons (literally) of it. :)

    Huge New Mugo

Hey whatever works. Are you going double strength to 30-30-30? Every other week? I'm trying to understand how you got all those buds to pop. Though it might have more to do with what you did at the end of last year. Great job whatever you did!

How are you fertilizing this tree?

    Best time to dig?

I have several 10-20 y.o. Parson's and San Jose in the yard that I'd like to get into pots. When is the best time to dig? I've had both success and failure with early spring collecting. Michael Hagedorn mentions June as a time he likes to work on them. Is now a good time to collect them as well?

    Tourniquets on bleeding branch stubs?

I dug up a mugo this past weekend and reduced the top growth to balance the tree. (re. timing: was either take it now or lose it) So far, so good but there are now some branch stubs bleeding sap. Not planning to do anything else to it right now but is there any benefit to trying to pinch these...

    Lighter spots on needles?

evmibo, that looks exactly like what I have. I think it's the start of a fungus in my trees. I'm doing three treatments of the copper fungicide, two weeks apart to try and halt its spread, like october said covering the soil with plastic first. You may want to do the same as a preventative. I...

Thanks again. Hitting everything with the copper stuff today.

    Lighter spots on needles?

Thanks for the replies. This looks like it in the 2nd and 3rd pics: http://www.bonsaibasho.com/micromarket/#/library/library/a133 I think it is a needle cast. I had black bands on the needles of a JBP last year which I sprayed with Daconil that seemed to halt it then. Maybe it spread and these...

    Lighter spots on needles?

Yikes, there are no crusty white spots. I don't think it's scale. No tiny bugs either and the discoloration is within the needles. Any particular fungicide?

    Lighter spots on needles?

Not sure what this is. There are lighter spots along the length of the needles. It's on both an Austrian and Japanese Black Pine. Is it the beginnings of Brown Spot? What can I do? Daconil?

Older San Jose - chasing back growth

Thanks for the tip Brian, that is exactly what I'm looking for. I'll give that a try. Glad to hear it's got potential as well! I am definitely going to let it grow more before I try anything. I'm not in a rush at all with this and do want to bring the growth much closer to the trunk before I...

Older San Jose - chasing back growth

Thanks for the replies. Here are some pics. There are two trunks, the one in the middle is deadwood for shari. I didn't save any cuttings but I have about 6 - 8 more similar to this in my yard. I hadn't considered grafting but if I can get budding at the base of any of the branches I'd be happy.

Older San Jose - chasing back growth

Hi All, I have an older San Jose potensai, probably a 30 y.o. plus piece of material. Dug last spring, in it's 2nd year in a pot. Early this March I cut it back hard and it's putting out some nice new growth, though not quite as far back as I'd like it to be. Short of good ferts, water and...

    pine layering question

You posted pics as I was writing. I bet you could fix that by layering just the damaged side. You'll definitely need strong rooting hormone, 0.1% IBA or better.

    pine layering question

They can be air layered, it'll take a while and you need strong rooting hormone. There are some posts by a member named Graydon on here if you do a search. You may be able to grow new roots by applying rooting hormone to the damaged side. If your tree still has half a nebari could you obtain...

    Giant group planting Drawf Schefflera

That'll be neat in the middle of your koi pond. It'll look like a mini mangrove island. Drop a bunjin pine in the middle, it'll look like an everglades hammock :)

Too late for 2nd layering this year?

I had planned on heeling it in and mulching around it well this winter then possibly trying a pumice/nursery flat type setup next season with this guy and my other two like it. Or in the ground. I have no problem waiting. Was just wondering if it could be done. Thanks!

Too late for 2nd layering this year?

I have a four trunk clump of trident maple from an air layer that I separated 3-4 weeks ago. It has lots of new growth sprouting on it so I believe it has rooted well in it's pond basket. Unfortunately I did the air layer too low, so there is about 4" of single trunk below the 4 branch split...

    Reapplying rooting hormone?

To follow up, it was the drainage. Some holes in the bag let the extra water out and roots grew pretty quickly thereafter. Was able to separate it a few days ago. Thanks again.

    Reapplying rooting hormone?

Thanks for the replies. I had three on a Trident, two grew and one didn't. The only difference was that the two that grew were vertical branches while the one that didn't was horizontal. Now I think the two vertical ones drained while the horizontal stayed too wet with the water laying in the...

    Reapplying rooting hormone?

Just wondering when air layering, does rooting hormone only get a one time application or are there instances when it should be periodically re-applied? I have several air layers cooking right now and root development has been fast on some while on others not so much. This is including air...
