    Best time to dig?

I have several 10-20 y.o. Parson's and San Jose in the yard that I'd like to get into pots. When is the best time to dig? I've had both success and failure with early spring collecting. Michael Hagedorn mentions June as a time he likes to work on them. Is now a good time to collect them as well?

    Tourniquets on bleeding branch stubs?

I dug up a mugo this past weekend and reduced the top growth to balance the tree. (re. timing: was either take it now or lose it) So far, so good but there are now some branch stubs bleeding sap. Not planning to do anything else to it right now but is there any benefit to trying to pinch these...

    Lighter spots on needles?

Not sure what this is. There are lighter spots along the length of the needles. It's on both an Austrian and Japanese Black Pine. Is it the beginnings of Brown Spot? What can I do? Daconil?

Older San Jose - chasing back growth

Hi All, I have an older San Jose potensai, probably a 30 y.o. plus piece of material. Dug last spring, in it's 2nd year in a pot. Early this March I cut it back hard and it's putting out some nice new growth, though not quite as far back as I'd like it to be. Short of good ferts, water and...

Too late for 2nd layering this year?

I have a four trunk clump of trident maple from an air layer that I separated 3-4 weeks ago. It has lots of new growth sprouting on it so I believe it has rooted well in it's pond basket. Unfortunately I did the air layer too low, so there is about 4" of single trunk below the 4 branch split...

    Reapplying rooting hormone?

Just wondering when air layering, does rooting hormone only get a one time application or are there instances when it should be periodically re-applied? I have several air layers cooking right now and root development has been fast on some while on others not so much. This is including air...

    Mugo pine taper

As I convert Mugo nursery material into bonsai in training I'm finding that I am left with what can best be described as a "stovepipe emerging from a knot" after reducing a tree down to a single trunk line. I'll do what I can to encourage sacrifice branches in the transition area where the...

    In training JWP branch cuts

I purchased a nursery Fukuzumi white pine several weeks back to begin training. It was a 3ft tree 1.25" at the base. So far I've slip potted it into a pond basket and this past week I chopped it 1.5" above the second whorl. I've left a stump to die back that I'll reduce this winter or next. Also...

    Scot pine nursery stock

Was at a local nursery yesterday, poking through last years stuff and saw a couple of balled Scots Pines. They were about 7 ft, 4-5" or so at the base. Although a growth of them was a little thin, one had very good buds and small branches on the lower trunk. Marked down to $50 a piece. If I took...

    Collecting Mugo "Shrubadori"

Hi all, I've found a nice mugo pine landscape "yamadori" in my neighborhood. It's a mature tree with about a 6" diameter central trunk and a foliage circumference of perhaps 30". The growth seems slightly stunted. I'll try and get some pics up soon. Because about half the tree has died back...
