That's really nice. Is the roof the same spacing as the slats on the bench?

    My collection in the snow

Here's my Mugo Pine, with my American Hornbeam just behind it Zelkova Orange, which I was surprised to learn can easily withstand temperatures as low as the mid 20's. Even the tender new leaves that grew late in the summer seem to be handling it just fine!

    My collection in the snow

Our first winter in North Carolina, and Durham got more snow than they have in years. My trees must feel right at home! I like to take pictures of them snow covered. maybe because it covers up the flaws, or maybe because it places them in a natural context. Either way, I think they look pretty...

Cleveland Bonsai Club Fall Show, September 29-30

I wish I could! Good luck to all y'all! (That's my attempt to sound southern now that I'm a North Carolinian.)

    A welcome visitor

I glanced at my hornbeam the other day and thought the topmost branch had a dead twig on it. ! A closer look revealed a greyish brown praying mantis. I've never seen them this color before, I've only seen green ones. I'm happy to have him perusing my collection, since they eat other insects. By...

New to Durham NC, how to acclimate trees

Well, my trees all made the move with no problems. I waited until evening of the night before I was set to make the drive, and then loaded them onto the back of the moving truck. I used drywall screws partially driven into the floor to immobilize them. All the trees seem happy here in North...

Norway Spruce in Zone 7 Durham NC

Hi Spruce owners. I just posted a thread on my move from Cleveland to Durham, and wanted to ask this more specific question. Do any of you have Norway Spruce in North Carolina, or a similar zone 7 climate? My research has shown that Norway Spruce isn't really found that far south except in the...

New to Durham NC, how to acclimate trees

I was concerned about the trees being in a hot moving van. Did you do anything to keep them cool in there?

New to Durham NC, how to acclimate trees

I actually think the summers are quite a bit hotter in NC. My family members who have moved there in recent years have said it's beastly hot compared to Cleveland. Maybe that's just their subjective evaluation? Could be.

New to Durham NC, how to acclimate trees

Hi, any members around Durham NC, I am seeking advice on how to acclimate my trees to that climate. I am moving from Cleveland Ohio (zone 5-6) to Durham in mid-July, I know it's probably a terrible time for the trees to get moved. Does anyone have specific advice on how to care for trees in...

    Acer palmatum 'deshojo'

Yes, but a little more tilt.

    Acer palmatum 'deshojo'

Have you considered repotting it at an angle, leaning to the left in the last picture? I think it would be more pleasing as a slant style.

What types of lights are you all using for the trees that come inside?

I just use cheap 4 foot shop lights with T12 tubes. I only have one indoor plant under lights: a largish orange tree. I don't know if it thrives, but it doesn't worsen either.

    Winter IS coming, start preparing

sounds like a good plan. I think the most important things are to keep the roots from getting too cold and protecting the branches from the wind.

    Small 6x6 greenhouse

If humidity really is too low a bowl of water isn't going to be enough to keep it up. I would think the water evaporating off the soil in the pots should be enough to maintain decent humidity. If not, you could put in an ultrasonic humidifier.

    The Van Meer Technique

Here's what I'm talking about. The pruning shears went half way through the base of that branch on the left. The top of the cut healed right up, the bottom of the branch that was bruised by the bottom blade of the bypass pruners continues to bleed sap, but the branch survived. All of this is...

    The Van Meer Technique

I could drink a whisky on the rocks every night, but my bank account couldn't handle it, and I'm sure it wouldn't be healthy.

    Learning to carve

I use 1:1:1 pumice, growstones and coco coir in deciduous, and I'm thinking I'll replace the coco coir with sifted pine bark for coniferous. BTW, growstone is a manufactured glass particle very similar to pumice that I buy locally at a hydroponic supplier. You could probably use lava instead...

    Crazy Jade

    2. Yes, I mean inorganic! 3. Cool, I've give wiring a shot I have tried outdoors before, and it did tend to sunburn. I'll try acclimating slowly. Here's my jade. It used to have leaves all the way down the branches, but it keeps loosing them. I had a gardener tell me to stop watering until it...
