    Die Grinder and bits

I've got a barely used die grinder with terrier bit, two burs (one unopened) and four basic burs. Asking $250 CDN ($200 USD) plus shipping.

    Schefflera

you could cut it back to 2" inches above the soil like and still be ok. It grows like a weed. nothing I've done to mine has caused it grief. I even left it in the laundry bin while a load of soapy water emptied in to it. Came back and the tree was floating in Tide. Washed it off, fine. All...

    crab in distress

didn't think to look at other crabs but I will now. It may have dried out. We're having a pretty long dry spell for southern ontario. I noticed yesterday that the soil was shedding water, looked wet but about 1cm down was dry as a bone. It's been a slow progression downward to this point...

    crab in distress

unsure why this crab's leaves are turning brown. It did fine last year in the nursery container. I transplanted it this year, around mid May. it hasn't grown much since and the leaves have begun turning brown and drying up. Is this a sign of root rot? I'm unfamiliar with crab. any thoughts?

    My Scheffelera Arbicola this spring.

how big would you say the leaves are after the defoliation?

    My Scheffelera Arbicola this spring.

have you considered defoliation? I've had great success this year round. Ended up with many leaves as small as my thumb nail.

    Thuja Occidentalis , Arborvitae Techny

I've been reading that juni's and conifers don't do well when fully defoliated, especially in the form of a trunk chop. Could be wrong, but if the lower half does die that could be the reason why. Worth a shot though as you have already considered.

    Cat litter as soil

look for shultz aquatic soil. Additionally, I saw some granite dust that looked suitable, it would need to be sifted well but the final product would be worth a try.

    Holy Wire Scars!

is putting the wire back and letting the tree grow over it an option? I just recently heard that leaving wire on to cause swelling and trunk thickening can be used on JBP. Not the same type of tree I know, but I would have never considered it before. The truck grows over the wire and it's...

    Needle cut on JBP Cascade

nice piece. I picked up a creeping scots I was unsure what I wanted to do with. I may go along these lines

    Wood carving

it would help to know what dremel bits you're using already. Generally, with hard woods smaller bits clog and burn quickly. I haven't found much from Dremel that's worked with the tough woods I've carved in the past. Your best bet is to find a hobby carving store in your area and tell them...

not really a bonsai? Better than any non-bonsai I've got! awesome stuff.

    Drawf Shefflera

The length and straightness of the branch is the part that bugs me the most. I let it grow for too long without pruning. Once I air-layer around the blue line, I can wait for some new buds and begin again with the branch, this time adding taper and curves and perhaps more roots. I want...

    Drawf Shefflera

thanks for the kind words. Leaves are begining to pop and there's a bunch of new buds, so it shouldn't be long before I can try the air layer. I do think I'll keep the bottom of the branch in place though and not remove it entirely. I post a pic with some notes on it to better explain my...

found an interesting article that explains air-layering. It explains the functions of the different layers, cambium, phloem and the xylem. I can see the difference now between cuttings and air-layering. http://www.afn.org/~bonsai/airlayer.html

what you're describing is the method I've seen most for trees in general and it seems to work well. It's also a method I'm not sure I fully understand the benefits of. If you've cut through the cambium all the way around, haven't you cut off the air layer's connection to the root system of the...

Q: Container vs. Ground - can't find the post...

seems like it's a matter of knowing your trees natural growing habbits and weighing that against what you hope to accomplish and by when. Good info.

Q: Container vs. Ground - can't find the post...

interesting concept. seems to go against what's often said. If you find the post please post the link, I'd like to read through it.

Truck runs like a dream. Had to get snows this winter and it made a world of difference. So much traction, I wasn't accustomed to it. I'm thinking about air layering the end of that lower branch and perhaps making a small cascade style. Concern is I've never air layered a thing. I've been...

    Dormsai? So many questions!

dwarf schefflera is a good condidate for indoor low light levels. When you can give it plenty of sun it should grow fast and it's pretty difficult to kill.

    Dwarf JWP

I should have snapped a few photos with my blackberry. It's definately grafted and the surface roots caught my eye. There was only two to pick from and I'm not sure if either was worth it. I'm more curious about the usage of the plant in general. I'll grab some more info on my way home tomorrow.

    Dwarf JWP

I saw a Dwarf japanese white pine at my local nursery and I'm curious to know if you guys think DJWP are any good for bonsai. I've read that dwarf varieties in general are bad for bonsai. wasn't cheap either, $149 for a plant 18" high.
