Are commercial fruiting persimmons suitable for bonsai?

Don’t recall if Bjorn’s YouTube series covers Persimmons in detail; most of the info on this Genus has yet to be translated. Fuyu aka Giant Fuyu has huge leaves and coarse branches. Suitable for larger bonsai imo.

Yatsubusa elm from evergreen garden works. Some ideas to consider.

Sure. Mainly glad you drew a long term goal. Having a point of reference is super helpful. Many cannot do that.

Bjorn’s wiring instruction as well as that of Colin Lewis is worth seeking out. Colin also understands how to not wire but still create well.

Pitch meaning angle of application of wire to branch. 60-70 degree pitch yields more subtle bends, while 30-45 degree pitch is used for preserving structural integrity of branch or trunk in tighter or more stressful compression bends. Think shohin shimpaku juniper for the 45 degree pitch...

As a veteran wiring instructor, I’ll say that regimented wiring with uniform pitch and rhythm is the proven way to become more skilled. I will tell beginners how to use different pitches and how to properly anchor wires first. Without some sort of notion to go back to that is static like 60...

All the trees in one of the movies were from Roy Nagatoshi’s nursery, and Roy said they killed all but one. “Mr. Miyagi” took it and settled up. Not sure which movie of all as I’m not well versed in California bonsai history yet. So their style in that case. The character would practice...

This elm has soul in my opinion. Part of that comes from the lack of regimented form between structural branches yet overall harmony. Far more harmonious with what you actually see outside on either side of the pond. One could argue the top is more regimented, but it would occur on a normal...

    Clip and Grow Appreciation Thread

You can make bonsai a variety of ways, and an aluminum and annealed copper wiring (espcially every single tiny shoot) is relatively new in the grand scheme of things. Someone older than me will know the details about when wiring became popular and timing of introduction of detail wiring. I’m...

Most if not all my trees have wire scars

Wiring does speed up the styling of a tree by multiple times vs clip and grow. Kyuzo Murata didn’t wire much at all, but styling took likely 3x as long. I happen to be an advocate for not using wire for some species and styles, given that sometimes the trees I like only have a handful of small...

Dear Abby, How do I downsize?

The Portland club is strong. I’m certain you could post something if allowed and find homes for what you don’t keep. Get the Lumos or other app, set up on phone at new spot, and see how many hours of direct sun it will receive. Then you’ll know, and people can advise.

    Is this a Deshojo?

Ok, ready to answer the expression question I think, but honestly I defer to Mr. Kirby on the science as he’s active in field. I’ll say this: Some species that are prone to reversion if not a fully stable cultivar. Seems to me like many elms, boxwood, junipers, etc can shift freely back and...

    Is this a Deshojo?

I think this cultivar name needs to be used. I always thought Super Saiyan Goku or Vegita would be fun. Yellow with white edges or something.

    Is this a Deshojo?

I’ll re-educate myself on this and get back to you. If you really want your mind blown, where you take the cutting can affect growth habit in many species. For example, a side branch outside cone of juvenility will be more prostrate, or not form a central leader easily. Same plant, different...

Seigen comes out Pink. Deshojo the best red imaginable; except maybe Shin-Deshojo. As a big fan of Nick Lenz, I say go creepy. One vote for Lenzian:

    Is this a Deshojo?

When I was in a plant breeding course with Dr. Knauft, I did my paper on introducing a new Japanese maple cultivar. Thought up what new variety I’d release and attributes that would separate it from the herd. Was told that the market is full. 3000ish cultivars with bastardized cultivars...

    Is this a Deshojo?

I do know the cultivars well, and yours has some characteristics that are similar. Looks a bit young to show habits that may help ID. Deshojo has soft branches and small leaves:

A shout out to Owen Reich and Hidden Gardens in IL for a great workshop!

Glad you two could make it and nice photos of event! I may use a few if that’s alright. Hidden Gardens is a resource that will only get better over the years. Jeff Shultz, the owner, is great. So many collected conifers. Left with a few new deciduous trees collected by Matt Turner, who also...

Not sure what’s going on, but I’ve met a lot of bonsai people all over. I have thinned my Facebook list and and met a lot of them or they are people I want to see posts from internationally. A four hour workshop with 8 people doesn’t always constitute knowing or being friends with someone...
