    Trident Root Work

Nice! Is the first tree on the left of the second picture the same as the tarantula from the first picture?

    Trident Root Work

You are correct. It's been over two years since the last round of root work, and there is a tourniquet under there somewhere. That was my original motivation behind wanting to dig it up this season i.e. I want to cut below the tourniquet and plant it on a tile. I'll follow your advice and do...

    Trident Root Work

Thanks, this makes sense to me. I'm going to chop instead and hope for a new leader and movement lower down and followup with root work the following year.

    Trident Root Work

Hello, I have a few trident maples in the ground thickening up. I have one that I haven't done any root work on in a couple of years and it's over ten feet tall now. I want to dig up it up and do some root prning/placement to it this spring before it the bugs open. I'll most likely be...

    Ants driving me mad

Raid makes a good Borax based liquid solution that works pretty well in combination with bait traps.

Have you noticed many Pollinators this year? (bugs)

My understanding is that the decline of pollinators is more likely due to the over use of insecticides especially systemic ones. Did you know even potato farmers are using systemic insecticides such as imidacloprid on their crops? I'm way more concerned about ingesting that stuff and the...

Bad Material + Bonsai Master = Bad Material

I remember reading this amazing post on internet bonsai club that showed the progression of what was basically a log in a pot, no taper, and poor initial branching. After carving, burning, back budding, and time, the end result was amazing. Can't find the post for the life of me...The artist...

If you are so confident in your detective work why not report this to the authorities instead of trying to be an internet hero?

    Mountain Hemlock material

Yes I was fertilizing it until about the end of August maybe early Sept. I'll take some pictures with a black background in January after needle trimming (running into holiday crazyness now :( ) I haven't been able to explore the root system yet, I'm weary of disturbing it too much since...

    Mountain Hemlock material

Quick update, I decided to remove a couple of branches today and open the tree up a bit. Taking things slow here because I absolutely cannot afford to lose this one. I will do some winter needle work tomorrow and then leave it alone until next fall/winter. As a next step I'm debating...

    Walter Pall's trees stolen

This sucks and is one reason I sometimes ponder leaving all my trees in the ground :( I met this one woman out in Langley BC @ Brookswood Nursery, I forget her name. Really nice person and her and her husband have a big property and greenhouse. She said at one point she had 100's of trees...

JRP Bud Selection after Candle Cutting

Hi, so I cut many of the candles on a JRP test subject of mine a few weeks ago. I have a nice selection of new buds cropping up. I've read the guides on pine candle cutting but the one thing I'm not clear on is bud selection. In the spots where 3 buds have popped should I get rid of the...

Rescue Azalia This Time Of Year?

I dug up an old Azalea that size last year, but I took most of the root ball. It took three people to lift the plant so it was quite large...This summer it is thriving and doing much better than when it was at its old home. I think if you can get enough roots and plant in the right soil/spot...

    Nursery Boxwood... Direction?

Yes it budded everywhere but definitely not evenly. Strongest budding was on the younger branches and the ones with leafs still on tips. Seems that the thicker branches didn't bud as strongly and the trunk that was completely chopped only has produced 5 or 6 buds.

    Nursery Boxwood... Direction?

Here is a quick update on the tree as of today, plenty of back budding going on! Just going to feed heavily for the rest of the summer and see where it goes from there.

    Mountain Hemlock material

The tree has done really well after the transplant and winter trimming, it has responded with a ton of new growth. For you Hemlock experts out there I have three questions: 1. Should I trim new growth this summer? 2. I want to remove a couple of large branches, can I do this now? 3. I want...

I hope so! Any special techniques in terms of wiring? I notice that boxwood branches are very hard and brittle.
