Don’t go to Champion Nursery in S.C., off of 707

I moved to S.C. over the summer and was quite excited to check out a nursery just down the road from me. I browsed for a while and came back to a honey suckle looking plant that I was thinking on, but didn’t get a chance to ask what species it was. I looked at a few azelea that were up on a...

Any idea where these cutters are from?

My brother in law was commenting on how perfect the wire cutters were at 180mm and I always gravitate back to the branch cutters. Any idea where I could get some more tools like these?

Emergency repot on a little Mikawa

The wind took this one off the bench and broke the pot. It is probably just as well, so I can give it a little more room to run. I was impressed by the microrizae (sp?) or fuzzy white stuff in the roots. I’ve never really witnessed that before in my trees, though I have only had a few JBP.

    Pre fab bench

Does anyone know a good value on decent looking prefabricated bench for my trees? I just moved to a community in S.C. with an HOA and I don’t want to start setting off complaints. Eventually I wouldn’t rule out building something, but looking for a quick fix during the chaos of un-packing...

    Defoliation of benjamina “Christine”

It looks healthy enough, right? Can I do some cutback while I am at it?

    Anyone know their ants?

Does anyone overwinter on the bench?

I.e. not overwinter? I’m sure it is species specific. But, I overwinter on the ground and have mulched with leaves, but my maples got hit with some fungal issues, so last season I didn’t use leaves. My Chinese junipers always come out worse for wear in the spring, leaves or no, I think because...

    Tsuga c. literati?

I found a nursery with some hemlock at reasonable prices, but they weren’t in the best health and not a lot (almost 0) of interior growth. This one has a couple children trees unless they come from the same roots under the soil, so likely 3 for $60. I always enjoyed the literati style but never...

    New Yixing pot

I received this pot in the mail today. It was a present from my wife for our 10th anniversary. I find it beautiful, but I was wondering if it is really “unglazed” or maybe slip glazed? I like it either way and have been dreaming of getting a hemlock into this style pot for a while now. I think...

Three new subjects but looking for an affordable nursery of landscaping stock

I went to a local nursery that had some very nice material, but they seemed to specialize in slow growing cultivars that were very pricey for my budget. I did pick up a few and will go back some time when I have more time to peruse. The white pine could be real nice. But, what I really want...

    Sick Junipers

All three of my junipers are looking rough this season. The Blau usually looks pretty bad coming out of winter but then has put on some healthy growth by now. I’m hoping I didn’t spread some fungus to the other two. The procumbans was cut back this spring and the Kishu was repotted. All are...

    Good repotting videos

it is difficult parsing YouTube’s offerings for decent repotting video’s. If you have any links, please share. Please no “spaghnum only” types. I know there are plenty of videos of how not to repot. Specifically, I am gathering courage to repot my eastern hemlock in the Spring, and want to move...

    Rescue Blau

This was barely more than a root cutting, rescued from my co-op garden, after they ripped everything out for a new planting, going on 15 years ago.

    Volunteer stick in a pot

This was an early tourniquet attempt of a tree going on 15 years ago. Might have come from a parking tie or something. Past time to repot, but maybe I can sneak it in this week. Get it a little deeper for next time.

A couple hemlock (canadensis) before the snow.

I took them out of the bed so that I can get some shots once the snow drops. I’m planning on repotting the one not in the flat this spring. I did cut it back pretty hard over the winter, which is not ideal timing I’m conjunction with the planned repotting; but I’m pretty confident it will power...

Acclimating JBP to colder environment (first winter)

I got my three new seedling cutting shipped from @cmeg1 today, and wanted to get some additional opinions on how to winter them in climate 7B, knowing the they are coming from the virtual tropics and are still some what small. I’d like to avoid the fridge or freezer box if possible, but I...

    Life, death and Taxus.

Sorry for the dramatic title, but I couldn’t let the pun lie. I just rescued a landscape yew and hoping for some general tips to increase the chances of survival. So far, I didn’t bare root, and I’ve removed about 25% of foliage just to make it mite manageable getting it in the cement mixing...

    General Shimp summer maintainence?

This one has been developing nicely over time and seems healthy; but should I be thinning out the upward pointing growth periodically? I’ve also heard to remove “crotch growth,” but isn’t that the closest thing to back budding for these? If you could point me to some reference material, I...

    Willow ficus.

I bought this from someone on here for 25$ in an ugly hexagonal pot.. the only one the kids are allowed to play with. My brother in law convinced me to remove a trunk to bring from three to two, and I think it is coming along. I’m not quite sure what I am trying to do with the secondary trunk...

    Kanuma

Is this kanuma? Do you think American Holly or Estern hemlock would appreciate some in the mix? Too bad it is medium -small grain size. What about some ficus? Would the acidity be detrimental?

    Good golly Ms. Holly

I picked this up at the Maryland Bonsai Assn. auction for $30. It is American holly, right? It is a project, but I was thinking along with the hemlocks it’ll round out the native collection some more. Now I have some studying to do.. maybe try to get it into a flat next spring and work in some...
