The passing of a formative Bonsai Artist (Vance Wood)

I’m very sorry to hear this news. I had no idea that he met his wife in Iowa. Maybe I did know that but forgot it. Vance does have a YouTube channel with some bonsai work posted. It is worth watching for any mugo lover. (About 18 videos) Vance always had a teaching heart and was very open to...

Who is using LED grow panels?

I’m currently using spider farmer with good results. I have had one unit fail and spider farmer did replace the unit at no cost to me. I still use some t5ho also. I just upgraded my t5ho unit to 8 lamps wide- I think it gets too warm though.

    60 y/o Jade

You can take a cutting now and start a back up. That way you won’t lose the plant- you can always have a back up. When I root cuttings I like to cut a piece then lay it on a shelf for 2-5 days. After that time sit it in a narrow vase with the cut end just above the water level. The roots will...

    Syzygium is shedding leaves

That is my guess but you kind of have to listen to the tree. Mine gets bright indirect light. If it’s in a window the direct sun may be frying it? Or if it’s freezing cold against the glass then that might be the trouble.

    Syzygium is shedding leaves

I have a couple of these that I keep indoors over winter under grow lights. I have found that they hate to dry out all the way. I did lose one this winter also. It is pretty chilly in my basement but as long as they don’t dry out all the way then they are very happy.

The list: You aren't doing bonsai unless you have:

    - you aren’t doing bonsai if you haven’t been locked out of your own house by your family because they thought you left for work or went to bed.

The list: You aren't doing bonsai unless you have:

-You aren’t doing bonsai if you haven’t had a tropical tree from Wigerts shipped to you in the middle of a blizzard. -You aren’t doing bonsai if you haven’t read all the posts in the “all aboard the mugo train” and still killed the tree.

    American Bonsai Processing Orders

I have not ordered lately but had really great experiences when I did order. I’m not a fan of the shears that I got from them but I love the other tools and pouch. I think they have a satisfaction guarantee so if you don’t like them definitively send them back!

Need Grow-light Recommendations for (Permanently) Indoor Bonsai

I have a couple of plant lights. 4 ft - 6 tube t5ho of the top shelf and spider farmers on the middle shelves. I also have a shelf unit for regular houseplants. I have finnex led lights mounted under the shelves. If you order the spider farmer just make sure you get the one with the adjustable...

Opinion on this lighted plant stand?

I also use a 6500k light based on the same reason that I started with freshwater plants and have expanded to indoor tropicals. The finnex brand leds were the first ones that I used. I have some spider farmer lights, some t5ho, and some finnex leds still in use. I use timers on all my lights and...

    Bonsai Nut App

I usually just have it open in safari at all times. I did just create the desktop shortcut so it looks like I have an app now. The site works well on safari.

    This is a stupid question.

I don’t think that it would be a good species for a traditional bonsai because the leaf size and growth habits. This doesn’t mean that some bonsai practices won’t help it though. Trimming back the tree and repotting it will likely help the tree to grow better. It should back bud if given good...

    Chopstick to check moisture.

One of the ways that I tell if my trees need a repot is how well the soil drains. There may be other reasons the pot would not drain well but either way I need to get in there and have a look.

    Help! Will My Baby Die?

It should be fine. Watering ficus inside is much different than watering out doors. It takes much longer than a day for them to dry out. With a fan on them- not sure how long that one takes. Look up the chopstick method. You can tell if the soil is dry on the bottom by poking a chopstick in...

Identifying a Crassula and a Ficus

It is ok to up pot- meaning put it in a larger pot with minimal root disruption. Pruning the roots should be done when the plant is heavily growing. May or June is the best time in my area for heavy work on ficus. Defoliating is heavy work on a ficus. It may decide to self defoliate in winter...

Identifying a Crassula and a Ficus

I will bring my plants in when it gets below 50. Not a few hours but a few nights under 50 ish. Maybe 45 if I’m busy or lazy. I’m going to say a few things that will go against what others have said- Never chop a weak tree, get it healthy first. Refusal is a name that doesn’t really fit anymore...
