    GIANT SEQUOIA bonsai question...

To bonsai any tree means to create an image of a full size and very old tree but in miniature. To do that your tree needs a substantial and believable trunk with proportionate branches and foliage. Since you have a seedling there, you need a trunk to start with. Although it might be possible it...

Collected Cedar Elm need help with carvin direction

Dario, I don't hate a helpful suggestion. Ain't no hater here! You are giving me options and that is what I came here for. From the picture it does look like 2 trunks with the right side being thicker. Actually, it is 3 trunks. If you look at the first pic posted from the top down you can...

Collected Cedar Elm need help with carvin direction

I cleaned out the middle of the bowl and drilled a 3/8" hole down through. It drains now! I went ahead and cleaned up the chop spots where I had cut with a saw a couple years ago. I also removed what was left of a branch I had cut in the front lower part of the V. I just took the carving about...

Collected Cedar Elm need help with carvin direction

Kinda bored and looking at this tree again today. This tree exploded in spring and was cut back early summer. It has gone through a second flush of growth I have alot more secondary and tertiary branching to work with now. I never did carve on it. The hole in the center seems to be going...

OOOPS! Pics fixed. Dario, would be great to have you take a quick look. I will probably have some of that "spar" time late spring after I use up all my spare time collecting late winter and early spring.

    Survivor - Boxwood Challenge

Well it was not much of a contest. ALL OF THEM MADE IT! Simply amazing since these were ripped out of the ground by a homeowner and left dry all night and day in the sun. Box is bulletproof! I had cut down and left some original growth because I was just too scared to chop any further. Now I...

Collected Cedar Elm need help with carvin direction

Thanks guys. No matter what, the drastic carving will wait. I have removed those lower limbs and the right apex. The tree is bursting out growth so I will give it a slight rest. I may carve away just a small amount (like removing 1/4") there at the base of the V so that the rotted hole will...

Collected Cedar Elm need help with carvin direction

So something like this? I would bend the center apex to the right and pull the lowest right branch down. I can take you right to where this Elm was collected but it is a grocery store now! I watch for them to start putting up construction tape and spraying to trees they want to keep. When...

Collected Cedar Elm need help with carvin direction

hmmm. Maybe leave the current center apex and cut off the right apex? Then one of those branches on the right needs to go. Not sure.

Collected Cedar Elm need help with carvin direction

I think this is the angle you are looking for. Also a shot from top down so you can see what is going on. As you can see there is a bowl of rot there. Note that I have already removed the long straight lower left branch. It had to go.

Collected Cedar Elm need help with carvin direction

Well maybe I can be persuaded not to carve it all the way to the ground but I feel the need to at least carve enough so that the water drains off. I don't want the current hole to rot straight through the center. It should at least drain out the front so that it gives the rot a proper direction...

Collected Cedar Elm need help with carvin direction

Here is the vert with removing the center trunk. It would leave a good gap in the middle ot the tree but I kinda like the more natural look of a tree recovering from a lightning strike. Please suggest other alternatives you feel are better but keep in mind what I am going for.

Collected Cedar Elm need help with carvin direction

Here is a vert of the tree keeping the 3 trunk. I am not so good at verts or styling! but real damn good at collecting trees though. Suggestions please.

Collected Cedar Elm need help with carvin direction

Collected Cedar Elm need help with carving direction I collected this tree last year. It is split in the middle and currently rotted in the middle with a bowl that holds water. What I want to do is carve out the center all the way down to the base so that it drains and looks more naturally...

    Cedar elm collected 2013 - Tree #3

Agreed Dario. No sense adding insult to injury. It's not like it is going on display anytime soon and the tree could care less. I will just let it rest and recover.

    Cedar elm collected 2013 - Tree #3

Ok.... I did what I had to do. Here is what I think is this years heavy pruning. I will be hoping for a new branch middle left because the one that is there now comes off the back. Also the whole tree will eventually need to be planted another 45 degrees turned in the pot. I did not set it...

Here they are all potted up. They were buried so deep some have roots growing up the back of the trunk. I had to plant some sideways.

The trees like your positive vibes guys. I did spray down with fungicide to give them all the best chances. Just wait till you see the trunks at the right angle. The roots were very soft and fresh feeling as soon as they were sprayed down. Not brittle and dried out. One gem I forgot to...

Twisty Cedar Elm - collected 2012

I will probably be going for something a little more irregular and natural. I need to post up some pics of the trees around my house. I don't think this is natural enough.

    Cedar elm collected 2013 - Tree #3

This tree was originally featured in my collecting 2013 post. It started out with massive new growth and I have cut it back pretty hard. I know the lower left branch is long. I am looking for a new leader to grow this year. What I have left is backup if I can get some side shoots. The tree was...

I figure 18 hours half bare rooted and these have a small chance in making it. I really am gambling on a 20% chance so 1 makes it. I thought it would be fun to do this like a horse race. Reply with any questions and put your bet on the one you want to live. 1-5. i will post up potted pics and...

    Survivor - Boxwood Challenge

Part 2 So..... I grabbed soaked them with a hose and threw them in the truck back to the shop. I figured most of the exposed roots should be gonners so I trimmed back and chopped all tops with a sawzall quick fast in a jiffy. Drove home and potted them up after continuous soaking. Here is...

    Survivor - Boxwood Challenge

Here is the story. Craigslist add with 6 Boxwood shrubs 4 ft high in old neighborhood. You dig em, you can have em. There is a trashcan in the picture right over the trunks in the picture so who knows. I email. They reply with another pic of a dug up Boxwood and say 1 is already out of the...

Twisty Cedar Elm - collected 2012

yeah the smaller of the 2 branches on the same plane will probably be removed at some point. Going to let the tree grow out for a while and settle in. The way the tree twists around it almost deserves a slowly rotating pedestal. The trunks are in a dance.
