    Blue Spruce formal upright?

Thanks. I'll do that. Tree is growing nicely. I haven't done anything to is except pinching back new growth but it keeps growing back which I take is a good sign that the tree is doing ok. One more question...when I got it I took it out of the nursery pot and replanted in to a slightly larger...

My first big purchase. Japanese Holly

My local nurseries have loads of Japanese Holly. I wondered how they would do as bonsai.

    Blue Spruce formal upright?

That does help. Would I be ok to start this year in the fall or better off to wait until next year? I know bonsai is a test of patience for sure, I am trying hard...I want to get out there with pruning shears in hand and go to work right now...lol

Collecting some Scrub Pine (Pinus virginiana) Yamadori....

I'll keep that in mind. If I were to look for something like oak, what size trees should I be looking at to collect? Little saplings or something that is several feet tall? Since you are pretty close to my area, what other local stuff is good to collect? I'm in Romney, WV by the way, just a...

My first attempt at pruning...Birds Nest Spruce

From what I read, there isn't a lot that can be done with the Birds Nest Spruce, but I got this one cheap and figured if nothing else, it would be a practice platform for pruning and thinning. Unfortunately, I forgot to take a before shot, but this is what I have now. It's been about a month...

    Blue Spruce formal upright?

Grabbed this last week at Walmart. I moved it over to a slightly larger pot and added better draining soil and pinched back some of the really long buds. Other than that, I have left it alone and plan to do so until at least this fall/winter if not until next year. Just wondering if there is...

Collecting some Scrub Pine (Pinus virginiana) Yamadori....

Thanks! I think I'll be heading out tomorrow to do some collecting. Hopefully I can find some that have captive roots like you suggest. Most of the ones I can get access to are in old shale pit areas, which at least will be easy digging. I'll probably end up building some boxes out of scrap wood...

Collecting some Scrub Pine (Pinus virginiana) Yamadori....

I am going to collect several specimens for future material and was wondering if I should pot or plant in the ground for the first year(s)? The trees I'll be collecting are 5ish years old I'd say, 2-3 feet tall.

    Dwarf Alberta Spruce question...

haha...personal...Yeah, after posting this I read that they tend to not do well with wiring. I guess I'll skip this one for now. I did end up picking up a Bird's Nest Spruce that I plan to do some light pruning and repotting to see what happens. Otherwise, I will try to collect some local stuff...

    Dwarf Alberta Spruce question...

First of all, do they make ok bonsai? I ask because I was out today at the nursery and they had a bunch ranging from very small to over 4 feet tall. The smaller of the biggest ones were between 3-4 feet tall and had very thick trunks. I guess my main question is (if they even make suitable...

Chamaecyparis Obtusa "Nana" for first timer?

I've looked for some Junipers but the couple places I have been had any out yet. I'll also keep my eyes open for anyone tearing out their old landscaping. Thanks again for the help.

Chamaecyparis Obtusa "Nana" for first timer?

Thanks everyone. Lots of great advice. I will skip this one and look for something a little more my level. I do think in the right hands it would have had good potential though. I plan to hit up a bonsai nursery end of the month plus keep an eye out at the other local nurseries as well as...

Found it here. I'm reading it now. Thanks again...I'm excited to get out there to check them out.

Chamaecyparis Obtusa "Nana" for first timer?

Found what I think is a decent looking Chamaecyparis Obtusa "Nana" at one of the local nurseries. The trunk seems to have decent character and the greenery is very full so there is lots to work with. The root ball is wrapped in burlap rather than potted...not sure if that is an issue. The price...

Favorite Online Akadama & Lava Rock Dealers

I can get Double Red Line Akadama for $39 shipped for a 15L bag. I cannot find a decent price on crushed lava rock though. Nothing local that is. Still looking online.

    Price of Akadama

I can get 15L bags of Double Red Line Akadama for $24 plus $15 for usps priority shipping. Unfortunately my only source is ordering it. If I asked for it at my local nursery they'd look at me like I had a parasitic second face growing out of the side of my head. I use Akadama in my aquarium for...

More dumb questions from the newb....

So how much growth needs to be left in order for the stump to survive and start growing again? I see some videos where the stump is literally a completely bare stump and it seems like there is no way that anything could come from it. ***Thanks for the link*** Yeah, I want to try to find...

More dumb questions from the newb....

I have been wondering some things that haven't been covered in the couple books I got from the library yesterday and can't find in my reading done on the internet.... If I go out and find a nice nursery tree and it's...well...a tree...how can one go about taking it from 6-8 feet tall to...

I want to start a bonsai...

I'll have to plan a road trip. That would be several hours away from me but may be worth the trip. I went to one of the local nurseries...waste of time unless I wanted to try to do a bonsai pansy...lol

I want to start a bonsai...

Thanks everyone for the advice. I planned to find something (pine) local, bring it home, plants it and leave it until next year. I will also see if I can find a bonsai nursery within a reasonable driving distance from me. I live near Winchester, VA and Cumberland, MD for a reference in case...

I want to start a bonsai...

Im heading into town this weekend to checkout the semi local nurseries, closest being 45 minutes away. I'll probably grab some junipers if they have some at a decent price but my main question is, is it bad for a beginner to start off with a pine variety? I read somewhere it wasn't advisable but...
