My local nurseries have loads of Japanese Holly. I wondered how they would do as bonsai.

That does help. Would I be ok to start this year in the fall or better off to wait until next year? I know bonsai is a test of patience for sure, I am trying hard...I want to get out there with pruning shears in hand and go to work right now...lol

Most of the ones I can get access to are in old shale pit areas, which at least will be easy digging. I'll probably end up building some boxes out of scrap wood...

Found what I think is a decent looking Chamaecyparis Obtusa "Nana" at one of the local nurseries. The trunk seems to have decent character and the greenery is very full so there is lots to work with. The root ball is wrapped in burlap rather than potted...not sure if that is an issue. The price...
