If it is too good to be true...

I really enjoyed grafting my boxwood so I did lots. Most of them took and are growing now...except the ones with really nice plump buds when I collected them. They took but not growing because the buds turned out to be FLOWERS! My boxwood managed to fool me and most likely have to...

    Son of a Boxwood...

From the tree on this thread... http://bonsainut.com/forums/showthread.php?14812-A-big-boxwood-%28progression%29 I separated this part on 09/25/2013. It sure looks like trash but I decided to save it. It looks like this now (a bit over 10 months later). Still a long way to go but it...

California Juniper...from John Naka to Ryan Neil

As posted by Ryan Neil at facebook for those who doesn't have an account. I cannot think of a better person to continue the legacy. :) "Just received the recent issue of the American Bonsai Society Journal, a commemorative tribute to John Naka. Where would American bonsai be without such an...

Grafting Korean Hornbeam to American Hornbeam?

Is it possible or recommended to graft Korean Hornbeam (KH) to American Hornbeam (AH)? I like KH and was sold an AH with huge leaves. I want to change all its foliage if possible. Should I or leave it be? Thoughts (pro or con) welcome. Thank you.

Trident maple under full TX sun

I pruned my trident's tip today and before throwing, I decided to snap a pic and post it here. I think the full sun exposure gave this tree some color since spring. The green color is really light but the bottom leaves are dark green. :)

What would you call grafted trees?

Seems like in nursery trade, you call a grafted tree by what is on top or what is grafted on. Is same practice universally accepted in bonsai? If I have a Hollywood Juniper and I graft it with Shimpaku and eliminate all the original foliage...is it now a Shimpaku? (or can I call it that at...

    Cost of apprenticeship

With all the talk about apprenticeship...I wonder about the cost. Let's say you got accepted to do a full 5 year apprenticeship in Japan...does anyone know the ball park figure on how much it costs per month (or per year)? Even rumor would be okay (as long as qualified as such). :D In...

Pilacik bonsai at eBay (Thumbs down)

I bought 2 Kiku tools from Pilacik bonsai on eBay ...very excited too because one will be my first (yeah FIRST) 12" knob cutter. Both came today and I am super disappointed. The 12" have no marks and dull as a shovel. The 9" is marked China and also dull. None have any signs on them of...

About 3 months ago, a very generous fellow B-Nutter sent me this piece from California. I did not measure it but based on the pic (and the folding chair), I am estimating it to be around 16" tall. It came wrapped in plastic with moist Dry Stall. I amended it w/ Turface, DE...
