Best laid plans of mice and men often go awry Wanted to repot 3 trees today but as I was half way through the first one, the sky got dark and it got cold Just before I finished it, the rain started. So I finished it up, put all the tools and things away and went inside. After about an hour, the...

Balance and Proportion ( in design of pots)

if you are dealing with a tree that was originally grown for bonsai, Id tend to agree as it has been grown with having its roots pruned periodically With a nursery trade tree or a yamadori, no it wont always fit in to that idea pot over time. I have a few trees now that I am not sure Ill ever...

    Will this work?

Odd that you haven't gotten it to work. I've used an Orbit battery operated timer, hose and lawn sprinkler for over 5 years. I have 2 separate zones controlled by 2 different timers. Only time I had a problem was when the sprinkler got partially clogged after 2 or 3 years and I didn't switch...

Balance and Proportion ( in design of pots)

Beautiftul pots for sure. While I understand there is an ideal set of parameters for a particular sized pot, I live in the unperfect world of the tree's roots. You can have the most perfectly proportioned pot for the pot and for the size of the tree's trunk, but if the tree's roots won't fit...

    Is my Bonsai dead?

Keep trees that dont need dormancy and can be grown indoors year-round like a ficus. There are lots of varieties of ficus that make nice bonsai. Willow leaf ficus is my favorite ficus There is no way to get around the inability to give a tree a dormant period that requires it

    Will this work?

If you are having trouble keeping up with watering, Id suggest a hose, lawn sprinkler and a timer with a fresh set of batteries That way you never "forget"

    Is my Bonsai dead?

Is it an azalea or an Ilex? I cant tell from the pictures. Either way if you had this inside all winter, it probably isnt going to fare very well. Trees that need a dormancy period need to be below 40 deg F for a few months in the winter

What “bonsaist” will you be uf you ever grow up?

Yea I've had a few trees I couldn't decide what to do with. I just leave em on the bench and keep looking at them until they tell me what they want to be or inspiration strikes

What “bonsaist” will you be uf you ever grow up?

I'll be me. I don't aspire to emulate anyone in particular. I try to learn from all the people whose trees I like and there are more than a few.

    Shohin azalea… hard cutback update

For azalea, I use miracid granular fertilizer in those little plastic baskets they sell. It's slow release and formulated for acid loving plants. My azaleas seem to appreciate it.

As for the what I did today. Got my once a year hair cut for my summer short hair look. Finally finished redoing my benches. Increased the height of my low benches and set up some taller narrow benches in the back. Also need to move the two in the front to their final spots but need help from...

    New cherry trees

Yea I heard about them having to destroy something like 100 to be able to redo that seawall. Was sad to hear it. Problem is some are getting inundated with sea water so aren't in the best health because of that. Nice of Japan to gift us more trees...I'm sure the USDA will be involved with that...
