    sand???

In John Naka's bonsai techniques 1 he refers to "sand" quite a lot. When he says that does he mean like fine sand as in play sand or beach sand, or is he talking about coarse sand like fishtank rocks or decomposed granite?

    Little black things on leaves

I was watering my big green Japanese maple today when I noticed a small section of its leaves had tiny little black...things for lack of a better word...they appear to be some sort of eggs. Its not growing from the leaves or doesn't appear to be so i don't think it's any kind of gall, but I...

Just for the record, don't ever do this!

This was one of my first ever "pre bonsai" back when I didn't have a clue what I was doing and kind of went of half cocked an ended up doing this which ultimately resulted in the death of my little tree.

    First step green maple

I got this young green Japanese maple from the nursery this year just to play with and I was wondering what y'all would do with it for now? I was thinking that I could chop it to one of those lower branches that point upward, trim the roots, and plant it in the ground over a tile and leave it...

opinions on my homemade inorganic soil.

I make my soil mix with 1 part permatill (expanded shale) 1 part decomposed granite, 1 part turface and half a part sifted pine bark. I sift everything through half inch screen as well as window screen sized screen. Does that sound like a good functional soil mix?

AcI recently bought some nice varieties of maple via eBay, 4 shindeshojo and 1 sharps pygmy, well I didn't think to ask if they were grafted or not so of course they all were grafted. permatill in soil mixes.

In the past I have used automotive spill absorbent and nothing else as a soil (sifted of course) and that works pretty well but it's a little more dense than I would like, so I've started mixing permatill (expanded slate)and pine bark fines. I have a few questions: ideally how long should the...

    Lowes jap maple.

I have no idea why lowes was selling jap maples like this, it wouldn't be a usable landscape tree but I'm not complaining, I love the shape and the trunk movement, I'm working on correcting some nebari issues, but other than that I need to develop branches and ramification and it'll be a good...

    Live oak I think?

I dug these two trees today the little one was just a bi product of digging the big one. I think they're live oaks but I'm not positive. Also I see now why all you good people were telling me not to try and dig a live oak. If you're thinking of collecting one of these, don't. They have long...

    Azalea styling?

I have this azalea with a really cool trunk. It hasn't been trained at all yet an I'm planning on chopping it this year, but I'm not sure what to use as the new top. It also has a section of inverse taper. I'm thinking that to fix the inverse taper problem I should leave the lowest branch on...
