    Growing almond from seed

thanks alot for your help, I will do so. I am/was worried that since the first root seems to have escaped through the drainage hole on the third one it was going to be a problem. it has leaves sprouting as well now. The other two I have going have roots escaping from the bottom, but are much...

    Growing almond from seed

not sure what forum to post this in so I am trying here. Short version of the story, my parents have almond trees on their property and I picked up a few pits, tossed them in the fridge for 2 months and lo and behold I have a half dozen that have sprouted roots. I planted them in 4inch pots...

    New Ficus Retusa

the soil is "bonsai mix" recommended to me by someone that allegedly grows retusas with it. The mix is sphagnum peat moss, pine bark, vermiculite, perlite, dolomite. I am keeping a good eye on the watering to not get the soil too damp. So far about 60% of the leaves have dropped, but there...

    New Ficus Retusa

I am wondering if it is committing suicide :( the yellowing leaves are still going, and I know I am not over-watering it. Here is a picture. Any tips or comments?? some tiny leaves seem new and growing but a crapload are just marbling yellow and falling off :(

    New Ficus Retusa

you have a good eye :) with regards to "shorten branches down to a pair of leaves", do you have any reading material/links I could look at to learn these techniques?! It would be helpful for me to develop this tree.

    New Ficus Retusa

having a small problem with it. I am about to repot it, but over the last few days, I have noticed that a number of leaves, mostly on the lower two branches, have started turning to a marble yellow and will easily drop off. I have a number of leaves showing a certain amount of transparency...

    New Ficus Retusa

keep in mind this is my first ever tree :p I have read about all these things, and they all appear to be reasonably within my means, yet I have yet to execute even a single cut or prune ever  I want to make sure I do things right. First thing I have to do is transfer it to a bonsai pot...

    New Ficus Retusa

Finally went ahead and got myself my first tree to learn with I got it online and had it mailed to me :o I wasn't happy with the little I could find locally. In any case, I have it outside right now letting it be after a few days transit in the mail. I was hoping some experienced...

    Russian Olive

no I meant over a flat rock. I had read about a method using a wood or ceramic tile, however I can't thread this through anything like that so I was going to use a flat stone under the rootball as close to the surface as possible. This trunk has alot of shoots, I am going to take a moment to...

    Russian Olive

I thought of this, but the roots are likely quite large (going to get to the planting tonight) I am hoping that surface root visible will develop into something nice. I was going to plant it above a rock ?

    Russian Olive

yes I was aware they are not a real olive tree, I didn't common name them the russian olive myself :o somebody else did, and its easier to remember  I wish I could have a real olive tree, however I have to settle for this one that can survive -30F winters (apparently :p) In any case, I...

    Russian Olive

Apologies if this is the wrong forum  Someone I know overheard me looking around for an Olive tree to grow as a learning experience, and my apparent lack of being able to find one. Showed up today at work yesterday with this, as a "gift"; Had it in his garden in a back...

    Canada/cold winter tips please

thank you for having me and not flaming the n00b :o I deal on other forums another type of crowd and ignorance is quickly tarred and feathered. I am still researching of course, looking for a tree that ideally has a defined trunk (the ginseng look of some ficus is not interesting to me...)...

    Canada/cold winter tips please

haha no I won't be emulating lightning :p I am going to choose a tropical tree that can be kept indoors during the winter time. Finding an olive tree in Quebec will likely prove difficult anyway as all that seems to be findable (on order only) is what they call the "Oliver de bohème", aka...

    Canada/cold winter tips please

I have been to botanical, and I just got back from Provence, where my father still has a dozen olive trees. I am giving up for now my hope to grow olive until I have a cold room I can set up with my lights. I am going to look at other species now. Larch? Any others I can consider?

    Canada/cold winter tips please

what I meant was that I have a location I can emulate spring and fall conditions that has artificial lighting, however my cool winter location currently doesn't have light. I am going to have to find an alternate one before I proceed. I am near Montreal, tombeur.

    Canada/cold winter tips please

I was expecting difficulty. I have a cool place for winter, and I have indoor lighting for the spring and fall, however for my winter location I will have to look into that. :( Hoping I don't have to give up my fondness for olive short of moving towards the south!

    Canada/cold winter tips please

Hello, I am new to the world of bonsai and have been doing quite a bit of reading and looking around. I haven't found much information however on how people interested in bonsai deal with cold climates as everyone seems to agree that trees need to live outside. I live in Quebec where the...
