    Maple leaf disease ID please

My water is pretty hard and alkaline. I was going to add an acidifier. But the other leaves make me think anthracnose also. Should I just use antifungal? Is copper okay?

    Maple leaf disease ID please

Hi all, I'm worried about fungal or viral issues with my maples. A lot of them are showing a mottled red, yellow, green appearance. Growth has been poor. New leaves and young shoots have withered and died. I've tried to remove all the affected foliage. Last summer I had some kind of infection...

    Help! Browning foliage

Thanks so much. I will do a deeper investigation of the soil and do a light change to loosen medium if compacted or too wet. I thought it had been too dry a few weeks back so I had been watering more frequently but maybe overcompensated.

    Help! Browning foliage

I just noticed today these large sections of browning in the foliage in a few sections. What is the cause of this? Pests, fungus, watering issue? Recently got really hot the past week. A couple weeks ago I sprayed a copper fungicide. In the winter I sprayed lime sulfur. I have some grafts I did...

    Fall color...

The wire is a much faster conductor of heat. A metal light pole is the same temperature as the air around it but if you stick your tongue to it, won't it freeze much faster than if you just opened your mouth?

    Question about pine sap

Just to follow up in this old thread, this tree died a few months later. I must have been too aggressive and the needles gradually dried out. There was no rescuing it.

Considering repotting an azalea. Is it too late?

Thanks for the suggestions. I really was itching to repot but I will wait until next year. This isn't a tree to be taking any chances with. Thanks.

Considering repotting an azalea. Is it too late?

Hi all, I am wondering if it is too late to repot or not. Being in Arcadia, CA, it is just starting to cool down but still with highs in the eighties and nineties. We don't have much of a winter here. I deflowered it end of July, about a month after the first blooms. Then some light wiring and...

Trunk diameter reduction in trunk chop

I saw a post on bonsaitonight where he used concrete to fill in a large hole in the trunk.it's a good idea though. I had thought of doing the same thing to create taper for a maple stump but haven't tried it yet. Let us know how it turns out.

How to fix this branch break?

Thanks for all the responses. I take it maybe I should leave it alone for now. I guess I wanted to see if people thought it was significant shortcoming and whether it was worth trying to correct. I may bring it to Kimura's nursery which turns out is right next to where I work for some lessons...

How to fix this branch break?

I recently got this shimpaku for a bargain, at least I thought it was a bargain. The main defect being this partial break in the branch that resulted from too much pressure. I am trying to figure out should I just let it be and consider it character or try to fix it. If trying to fix it, I...

I managed to pick up this beautiful Serissa just last week. Sorry, not sure why the pics are sideways or how to flip them.

    Question about pine sap

I tried to cut in to the bark of my japanese black pine to thicken the trunk. I made maybe 20 small 1-2cm vertical cuts alone inconspicuous lines with a small knife. But today I saw little droplets of sap coming out. Should I be worried?? Will the sap be easy to remove later? What to do now...

    Help with my first DJBP

Thanks for the comments. That back branch is really out of place but I am glad I held off doing anything to it as now I think I can use it for experimenting with grafts later on. For now, I'll just get to know the tree and learn the basic care of it. There are a lot of branches 5+ off of each...

    My first air layer!

I got this maple at home depot for $40, looked a little sickly but had a good looking taper at the top and I think it turned out to be a successful experiment. I cut a ring around the trunk near the top but couldn't quite commit myself so I left a strip but then used a wire tourniquet too. Yes...

    Help with my first DJBP

Hi, just got my first JBP, it is a dwarf variety. I did not want to make a mistake. I was thinking if I should remove that long back branch that is jutting from the right rear and start wiring the branches down and cleaning up the unnecessary branches. Or should I wait a year? The branching...

    What's wrong with my maple?

I was worried that it was verticillum wilt too but I had cut off the ends that were black and there was no interior streaking. I really should have sealed the ends when I cut them though. Originally, I had wrapped the top half of the plant in saran wrap into a tight bundle and slid it through. I...

    What's wrong with my maple?

Thanks for the reply, I'll follow your instructions. Haha, the brown doughnut is a rock with a hole in it. I was planning on letting it fatten up in the hole so that it becomes a natural tourniquet with the goal being that a new base will form above the hole and then of course it will be wrapped...

    What's wrong with my maple?

Hi, can someone help me figure out what is wrong with this picture? I don't remember right now which species, could be a kiyohime or yatsubusa from forest farm. Earlier it lost all its leaves due to wind burn or heat and then during a cool spell grew a lot of new leaves. Recently though we have...
