Most natural style for a Sabina "Monna" (Calgary Carpet)

OK, I guess I'll hold off and see if I can keep a plant alive in a pot in Nebraska winters or not.

Most natural style for a Sabina "Monna" (Calgary Carpet)

Should I do NOTHING now? Or would the plant benefit from some pruning at this time and repotting later?

Most natural style for a Sabina "Monna" (Calgary Carpet)

Sure, makes sense. Can anyone comment on if this is a popular species to work on bonsai with? Anyone here have direct experience?

Most natural style for a Sabina "Monna" (Calgary Carpet)

So I found a fairly healthy Juniperus Sabina "Monna" for $15. I haven't done anything with because I am waiting for my tools to come from Stone Lantern. I had trimmed up some Ficus with kitchen scissors but I think I'm going to need some real branch cutters for this project so I ordered some...

Wiring the bonsai INTO the container

Apparently I'm dense as I'm having a problem that doesn't seem like I should be having. I live in a somewhat windy area. We often get 30-40mph winds and 60-80mph winds when it storms. Last night was a little windy and I came out this morning to find my small ficus had been blown over. It was...

Do you put pre-bonsai in bonsai soil or potting soil?

My problem is I'm having trouble sourcing local ingredients for bonsai soil. I can't be stuck paying $14 for a tiny little back of Hoffman "bonsai soil mix".

Do you put pre-bonsai in bonsai soil or potting soil?

If you are taking say, nursery stock and cutting it back to scale the foliage to match the trunk size and then it needs to grow for a couple seasons, do you put it in potting soil or go straight to bonsai soil?

    Winter in the midwest?

What parameters are we talking about here. It routinely gets below 0 F here every winter. If I leave it in a pot do I just pile mulch on top of the pot? Up to the highest branches? I know people have said "it depends on the tree" but before I go buy something that I kill the first winter or...

    Winter in the midwest?

So, if I want to style a nursery plant into a bonsai and I go buy a plant that will be native (hardy) to my zone and pot it and prune it and wire etc. what do I do with it in the winter? Because of the small pot it will freeze and die in Nebraska in the winter. Do I put it in my garage? What...

    OH-NO Home Depot Juni

I have a really basic question but I'm a newb. Why is the pot at an angle (I have seen it in other pictures too). Is it to get the new growth to grow "up" thereby creating a bend between what you have trained to be swept over and the new growth?

    First post, first ever bonsai.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I've got it out on my deck as I mentioned. My goal is to let the buds/tips I saw when I was pruning leaf out to make sure the plant regains it's health. Then I will consider repotting in bonsai soil. I'm not sure where to get some. I'm not sure if discussing...

    First post, first ever bonsai.

I did just prune it, trying to get a basic shape going based on some of the youtube videos I've watched. Then hoping to get it to leaf out more compactly since I cut off some of the long gangly shoots. I was hoping to get it into a wider pot but I'm not sure at this point. It is in normal...

    First post, first ever bonsai.

On my earlier note, when should I consider re-potting?

    First post, first ever bonsai.

Not sure why the pictures are sideways. They open correctly on my desktop. But yes, it was a cell phone picture. I live in Omaha, Nebraska. Its a ficus retusa, or at least, that's what it was labeled, and everything seemed pretty accurate from what I've seen.

    First post, first ever bonsai.

Hello all. This is my first post. I registered yesterday and did some browsing. I picked up a garden center bonsai. It seemed in relatively good health though after the original "mass produced training" it had been left to grow. So I brought it home and tried to give it some basic shape...
