    Japanese Maple Project

The trees receive moderate sun exposure from 8 am to 16h pm. I'll put some pictures when I get home tonight, but the leaves look like the two first pictures of ml_work's last post.

    Japanese Maple Project

Ok! So, my maples are in a 6 x 8 greenhouse snap & grow greenhouse heated with a 1500W Ritetemp heater: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Soleil-1500-Watt-Forced-Air-Electric-Portable-Heater-LH-875A/202301600. I try to keep the inside of my greenhouse at a 54°F, 12°C temperature, but with the...

    Japanese Maple Project

I have the same problem as shown on ml_work's photos with my japanese maples. As the leaves grow in the spring, they leaf out and then they seem to stop growing. To me the problem seems to be in the roots, because the leaves seem perfectly in good shape, then the news branches begin leaning down...

    Trident health

Ok! Thanks everyone for the input! I definitely think it was too much water... when I lifted the pot yesterday some water came out of it, so I think the water just sat there and stayed stagnant. Maybe the roots lacked a bit of air and that's why the leaves turned curly. It was cloudy here this...

What species are you hunting or keeping an eye out for this year?

This year and the coming years I'll be watching for a japanese maple cultivar called beni chidori. I didn't find it in usa or canada importing it from france would cost me 250$ with all the permits. The cultivar seems very nice: people say that it's fast grower, well suited to grow in bonsaï pot...

    Trident health

Hi everybody. I have some concerns with the health of my trident and certain of my other trees. I've started my greenhouse something like 2-3 weeks ago (my trees overwinter in an isolated heated box) and it's only my second year using the greenhouse. Recently, I've noticed that some of my trees...

    My first Tigerbark

You won't need to get a greenhouse for a ficus indeed. It'll do well inside. Just make sure you don't keep it above an air-heater because it'll dry out. Sometimes people place their bonsai in a window to provide them with light, but forget that often air-heaters are placed below those windows...

    Think you need a teacher?

Maybe I can clarify a bit on what I meant when I said ''material with potential''. English is not my first language and sometimes my choice of words may not be right. I apologize for that. First part is exactly what PaulH said: Sometimes some trees have major defaults in them that can't...

    Think you need a teacher?

It does indeed ring a bell for me. Some people spend their time on mixing new bonsai soils, trying new fertilizers, concocting some concrete recipes for root over rock plantations, air layering some stuff that has no potential, attending special bonsai classes on specific topics, collecting...

    Substitute for kanuma?

For my satsukis in development, I use 1:1 peat moss and perlite. Peat moss is pH 5 and perlite is 7, so it gives the wanted pH of around 6. My satsukis do fine in this mix.

elm chop induces feelings of regret...nausea

You had kind of a reverse taper with a big ugly ball at some point. There was nothing to do about that! Good luck!

    Acer palmatum var. beni chidori

Thank you! I've sent them a message. If I can find someone who can import it from Japan or France I'd be very happy!

    Spring is coming?

Well here in Quebec city this morning, we got -28°C, -19°F. So I'd say no, the spring is definitely not coming! ^^ I took this picture this morning at 6:00 just for fun:

    Satsuki cuttings

Satsuki Bonsai-en seem to be quite specialized in Satsuki azaleas. I never went there myself but they seem to have interesting plants. They ship throughout USA and they have nice starter plants on their website (which doesn't seem to be up to date). Does anyone know this place...

I really do like your threads that start with ''I'm gonna make'', like ''I'm gonna make brooms'' or this one! Sounds really determinate! ^^

Anyone have photos to show progress of a stick in a pot?

It's not a progression, but they are definitely 3 sticks! ^^I wanted to share my acquisitions from yesterday so here it is! Callicarpa, prunus sakura and ilex serrata, none of which I had earlier. Callicarpa can make some decent bonsai. Here is a good example: And the purple fruits...

What makes a good bonsai nursery?

Well that's a really pleasant question to anwser :D As JudyB. said: a nursery close to where I live... I just drove 2 hours and a half yesterday to get to my closest bonsai nursery!! But the main thing for me would be to have lots of varieties for bonsai in starter plants. Yesterday I just...

    Acer palmatum var. beni chidori

I got my answer from maple stone ornementals... they don't know anyone selling it so it seems hard to obtain. Here is why I want this cultivar: It's from Pius Notter's garden. And here is the reference...

    Acer palmatum var. beni chidori

Ok... I guess it explains why the site isn't too much what you'd expect from a tree seller. I haven't got any response from maple stone ornementals yet. I tried iselinursery.com, and they have plenty of species but they couldn't help me in getting that particular cultivar. I wonder how the...

    Acer palmatum var. beni chidori

Hi everyone, Does anyone know a place in USA or Canada where I could find the ''beni chidori'' japanese maple cultivar? It's a wonderful variety that puts up pink leaves in spring... Bjorn Bjorholm shared a nice picture of it here...
