    Growing from Seed

Just having jumped into Bonsai this fall, I am thrilled with the idea of growing from seeds and have collected and started about 25 Mountain Ash seeds - will be putting them out for stratification shortly. In the coming summer I plan to try my hand at cuttings from my serviceberry shrub.

    Starting Up

I am also just starting this journey - and this is what I have done. I purchased a Chinese Elm that is probably a couple years old with some ramification that I can start practicing pruning come spring. I also purchased several Norfolk Island Pine seedlings from a local nursery that I can play...

Do you come to a discussion forum for the truth or an attaboy?

I agree entirely. Having had several interests over the years depending on my life stage, and belonging to several forums over those years has taught me some things - don't be afraid to ask questions when you are new (as I am here). This allows the more experienced people to get to know you, and...

one of the best teaching videos

Wow - lightbulb moment! Thanks so much for the direction to Ryan Neil's videos, I just watched a short one (under 6 min) of him working on a Black Pine and feel like I learned a ton already! Will definitely take notes when watching the longer demos! :D

    Question About Cuttlings

Nice ending for the crabapple trimmings! As far as the book, the second one is the only one I've ever seen commented about - are they maybe the same thing you just got a shortened version of the title?

    First frost tonight

I bet they are beautiful Dan! We get something red once in awhile - the rare red maple, and berries on the mountain ash. My serviceberry turns red, a big reason I want to try cultivating a bonsai from it!

Intro - New to bonsai, falling leaves

I'm guessing that New England (like Montana) will have more than a couple days in a row of temperatures well below the upper 30s - which just goes to show you that what is a great outside tree in Alabama will not work as an outside tree in the Northern climes :( And since my understanding is...

    Question About Cuttlings

This one has been bookmarked and looks to be quite helpful! It appears my best bet is to wait until next summer to try my hand at semi-softwood cuttings of my Serviceberry. The Dirr and Heuserbook is now on my Amazon wishlist!

    Question About Cuttlings

Propagation Hi there - I noticed no one gave you an answer, and I can't give one either! But as a newcomer to the journey of bonsai, one of the things that has attracted me is the possibility of using many local plants and trees... but propagation is clearly key to that process. I...

    First frost tonight

Haha - around here we do have fall color - singular. Most everything here turns yellow or is evergreen! CorinneL

    First frost tonight

Frost We've had a few light frosts already, snow on the surrounding hills. Love this time of year! CorinneL

    My introduction thread

Thanks! I have it against the south side of the house for now, but also have a shed and unheated garage, so will look there if I feel the need to protect the elm from super frigid weather! CorinneL

    My introduction thread

Thanks! I realized from the beginning that there was some confusion between the Chinese Elm and the Zelkova - when I purchased it was originally listed as a Chinese Elm, but had the Zelkova name in the description and invoice. The treatment seems to be fairly similar. It's hardiness was...

    My introduction thread

So glad to have found you guys! Figured I might as well put my introduction here too. I'm sure like most I have always found bonsai 'cool' but never developed a further interest in it until a recent visit to the Botanical Gardens in Montreal - I was so impressed with all the different trees...
