    New Ficus Microcarpa Ginseng

Ginseng ficus While I can agree that root over rock needs to start with smaller roots, I really think that the Ficus microcarpa gets a very bad rep. There are a larger number of "inappropriate" specimens but if you look, you can find some decent ones, especially if you are willing to ground...

Question about branch development on a shantung maple

Hello, I wanted to field a quick question. I am currently working a shantung maple that was chopped and allowed to regrow three leaders. I am styling it in an open umbrella style. I am getting some very nice growth on the branches. Is it preferable, on maples, to allow this growth to...

    Repotting into a grow pot

Hello all, I wanted to see if I could get some advice from the more experienced members of the community. I am planning (next Spring) to repot/up-pot a few of my trees into grow boxes/pots. I understand ground planting is best but for several reasons the grow boxes are my best choice. I...

    First Bonsai Gift

I was most defiantly thinking about using a plastic training pot instead of anything ceramic. I am a Safety Engineer and I think I might get my decoder ring taken away if I gave her a ceramic pot.

    First Bonsai Gift

I was thinking about yaupon, it does fairly well in the area and I have a supplier that I can get some very nice fairly cheap trees from.

    First Bonsai Gift

I was hoping to get some suggestions. In August of this year, my niece will turn three. She has shown (as much as a three-year-old can) an interest in gardening. Starting in March, we will be planting some really basic flowers and vegetables in a area at her house. I would like to get her a...

    abit contrived

It is a bit more colorful and cutesy than what I normally like but I have seen some penjing landscapes that include ships, towns, people, towers, temples, and other things along with the rocks and trees. The one aspect that I would suggest is proportion. If the rock represents an island, the...

For those of you with plants in pots in the ground

I am in 8b and I have started to pull the hardier stuff out of cold storage. I do not have anything inj the ground right now but will wait on any repotting until probably mid to late February. The temperatures current are running low 60s to low 70s during the day and high 30s to low/mid 40s...

    Winter's Dance

We have had a couple of nights where we have dropped into the teens (15-17). I do not see it happening much after the next two weeks though. How are they doing with the freeze/thaw since I doubt it is staying that cold where you are?

    Winter's Dance

Anything that I have that is dormant and deciduous has gone into the cold shop for the winter. Things like the azaleas and junipers are still outside next to a wall. The tropicals have come inside and are doing fine under a grow light (some are in a terrarium). The only subtropical that I...

    adding acidity to azalea soil

I Use coffee grounds on the one that I have. I do make sure that it does not have any other chemcials like flavorings. I would be interested to know how to acidify the soil myself without using chemicals, espcially since the water around my parts is pretty alkaline to begin with.

    Lonicera

Lonicera back bud fairly well. Depending on the cultivar, it could take longer or shorter but I have seen some cut to the ground and come back.

    Lonicera

Lonicera can be either shrubs or vines…by the looks of it, you have the vine variety. I would be very hesitant to say which kind though with the light bark, light green leaves, and such it looks to be common or cape or one of the other varieties. Most vining honeysuckle will produce opposite...

Agreed, nice virts...much better than the finger painting I did....got the point across beautifully.

    Lonicera

Please realize I am limited by such paltry considerations as time, technology, and actual skill but here is a suggestion (which I am sure someone will come up with a better mock up for). Lonicera are very good at back budding and given a little time and patience, I am sure you can get the limbs...

    Desert Rose "Adenium obesum" project

Thank you for the reminder...I remembered and cleaned hands and tools afterwards. Any material taken off was bagged and disposed of. This is actually a good reminder that some of the stock we work with is toxic, either to humans or sometimes our pets.

    Desert Rose "Adenium obesum" project

Update The central "branch was removed and healed over fairly well. Currently the leaves are growing a bit more than I had hoped. It is being stored in my indoor greenhouse for the moment since the weather has taken a turn for the worse. Overall, though, it is healthy and coming along...

    Common/Persian Walnut

OK, so I picked up a nursery stock Common/Persian walnut over the holiday (Juglans regia) to experiment with. It was decent sized (2.5-3 inch base, roughly 25 inches tall). I have been looking online for some kind of information and have been somewhat of a bust. I know that they have compound...

    Forget water and fertilizer

I have to agree with this. While I am fairly proficient at keeping plants and trees alive (something I inherited from my father), the rest of my family is somewhat less...adept. I think the point here is that it is an interesting artistic piece.

    bonsai journal

From my own personal view, I enjoy the fact that the app is as mobile as it can be. I have used excel sheets in the past as well as normal word processing journals and hand written notes in small notebooks. The app mentioned has a listing of the most popular trees, the ability to add more, as...
