    Elm not pushing shoots yet

Haha no it's a mashup of my first name Dustin, and my last name. It was from my KU email and it just stuck as a user name.

    Elm not pushing shoots yet

I have three Chinese Elms that have NOT pushed leaves yet. They have buds and they are red and do not look dead and dry. I accidentally scratched one the other day when it fell and it still had a layer of green under the bark. This is the first year they wintered outside completely in Kansas...

    Beginner Chinese Elm advice

I bought my first Chinese Elm 2 falls ago and at the urging of the great people here I left it indoors over the winter and it lost leaves and looked pitiful for a large part of the winter. It did restart pushing buds like yours and grew like a weed all last season. A large part of why it is...

    Venturing into Elmland

They do grow like a weed! I picked up another cheap sad looking one in early April, cut it back and now it looks like a completely different tree.

A new to me Chinese Elm, looking for advice

I had the same issue this time last year with a little Chinese Elm I purchased. I limped it through the winter in full sun in my 50 degree (cause I'm a poor grad student) apartment. It would shoot new leaves and drop them, then bud again and drop them. It may be kinda stressful but it will...

    An Odd Question....

I was doing some digging and I guess there is a company that does make potting soil with cremated remains in it. They seemed to want to market it to cities or other groups. Which I find odd, I wouldn't want my remains be all willy nilly stuck somewhere in a park. Perhaps I will stick with...

    An Odd Question....

I had heard of the diamond as well before, but never the DNA one, that is very interesting.

    An Odd Question....

I was thinking the pot idea would be a good one. Then I thought about all the used and antique pots floating around out there. Do you know who your bonsai is potted in? No worries about the pragmatism of the answer, I like to the point. I hadn't thought of the pot until after I'd posted...

    An Odd Question....

Well I'm not sure if this is off topic, but it certainly has to do with bonsai at least how I'm looking at it. Due to a very sudden issue with a family member I find that I will be at a funeral at the end of the week. As these things usually do, they get one to thinking about how they...

    New to it.

I would second the idea of a Chinese Elm, mine sat inside all winter and has exploded this spring. Very hardy, and lots of trimming and watering. I've had to water twice a day sometimes. I'm ready for some color this fall and work that spring will bring.

    What are you working on?

Watching and waiting, patience is a virtue right? Once a week I have to take my clippers from my girlfriend who thinks my two Ulmus constantly need hair cuts. She cut off a bunch of stuff one day while I was a work, not happy. So I got an Ulmus for her to chop... I've been looking around...

    Please help with identification

I'd go with an Elm based on the leaf structure. The bases of the leaves seem staggered and not even. Also the leaves themselves are staggered apart. If memory serves Hornbeam leaves are in pairs.

    New little Chinese Elm

I was thinking of the slip pot idea, I was mainly going to just put regular organic matter soil in for it to give it lots of room to grow. I've got some shade area I think....so it could work. This is it as of today. Thanks for the tip JudyB! I think I'm going to head outside and...

    New little Chinese Elm

Well, I picked up a new little Ulmus when I was buying my girlfriend one for her to kill again I'm sure. I couldn't resist it, it was so hairy and only had growth up top because that's all the light it got at Earl May. Its pretty wild here. Both during the great cut back. The...

    Is this a ficus?

I picked up and juniper and a ginger root ficus from the Mart was well. I was extremely supprised to see both were potted in complete soil versus the usual glued rocks over moss.

    Elm Wintering

I usually keep them on a raised retaining wall by my door. It has just been windy these last few days so I set them in the grass at the top of the wall to prevent them blowing over. I have been toying with building a box/stand that would be big enough to sit them a top of it and flip over and...

    Elm Wintering

Well I suppose I should update. I've kept the Elm inside for the winter with all your suggestions. It did drop leaves constantly and looked kinda sad, but late February it pushed a ton of new leaves. Winter here has finally decided to leave, course in Kansas we tend to go week to week, but...

    Elm Wintering

The pictures defiantly help, I picked up a new book today as well which has good pictures as well. I think I will stick to the forum and books from now on, the internets have so much contradictory info. So my next question, since you think I need to bring it in is when should I do so? Its...

    Elm Wintering

I'm honestly not sure how long it was kept indoors, I'm hoping only for the short period of time to sell it. I'd hope the grower knew to keep it outside but you never know when it comes to mass production.

    Elm Wintering

Well the label is another issue. It says its a Zelkova and then states that its an U. parviflora. So I think they mean for it to have an identity crisis. I thought the leaves looked like parviflora, but the bark didn't fit the bill, so I snooped a round the forum more and found Zelkova leaves...

    new to bonsai

I would go with a ficus as well as a learning plant. Mine just never seem to die, even after my cat chewed the leaves off of them. The ones I have I keep indoors in a window and they do great.

    Elm Wintering

I was leaning more towards the garage this year anyway just because who knows what kind of life it had prior. So I'm assuming mulching is the preferred method of wintering then? I've never kept anything all winter that needed a dormancy! I always spent the spring begrudgingly helping mother...

    Elm Wintering

I live in 5B. We don't get too much snow, maybe 3ft total all winter, it just depends. As for wind where I am at isn't too bad, the plant as it sits just gets south wind, no northern cold wind. My place isn't too windy, the apartment building blocks it pretty well.

    Elm Wintering

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forums, not to bonsai although I am new to the world of Elms. This is my first deciduous bonsai so I am lacking in the wintering knowledge. I'm in the great State of Kansas in Lawrence and my heartiness zone is 5B, and I'm wondering how I need to winter my Elm...
