Show us your Oak (Quercus) Pre-Bonsai

Thank you, looking forward to developing it more! We repotted it in December of 21'. We did half bare root and cleaned up under the main root base. We'll do the other half in 23'. The tree is recovering well but did drop some leaves, a good indicator to not push them any further.

I just finished this carved "ibigawa" rock planting with shimpaku juniper!

I'm not familiar with Tufa rock, I use essentially a giant piece of pumice to copy Kimura's technique. Perhaps there is a better rock available elsewhere; I've heard some people make them entirely from cement. Nothing wrong with experimenting. Always wear eye protection, harder rock can shatter...

I just finished this carved "ibigawa" rock planting with shimpaku juniper!

Excellent advice, I soak the rock thoroughly and yes it still gets all over my hair and eyes, even with protection, but thankfully it eliminates the fine particles. If you've never had a volcanic cornea scrub you're really missing out.

I just finished this carved "ibigawa" rock planting with shimpaku juniper!

Will do in the future! I've got a few more stone carving projects I've been itching to do for years. Here is a great tutorial by the man himself.

I just finished this carved "ibigawa" rock planting with shimpaku juniper!

I followed Kimura's basic approach and I'm really happy with the results, all things considered. If you want a custom carved rock please message me. If the National show isn't canceled I'll likely be going so you can pick it up then or I can ship anywhere.

Large Chickasaw Plum Coming Up on FB Auction

Correct me if I'm getting the attribution wrong, but I believe Owen Reich called them the American Ume. The rough dark bark and white flowers are super.

    Shimpaku

Thanks for the shout out! I only have 4" kishu shimpaku starters left this season. Check out @kingsville grower too, he grows a few different varieties. There are over a dozen different types of shimpaku (as far as I know) and someone in your area will know which ones are the best for your area.

Try Arizona Cypress, they have a strong smell as well.

Persian Lilac and Weeping Fig up on FB auction

https://www.facebook.com/groups/bonsai.sales/ I don't have more of these and won't carry them in the future. The Lilac is an interesting statement piece and the blooms are fragrant. I'd imagine it would ramify more but I've never seen one refined for a while. J/k FB denied the Weeping Fig...

Tigerbark ficus ( progress thread )

Yes they make good trees but thicken very slowly compared to other Ficus.

My Tiniest tree, What are you trying that's new??

Here is a little Chinese elm I've been working on for about seven years. I need to graft a branch... I'm not looking forward to that haha.

Tigerbark ficus ( progress thread )

Other nurseries and myself call the top part Ficus retusa “green gem” but I cannot find any good literature to support that.

    Merging Bougie Trunks?

I've never seen big bougies merge themselves like ficus naturally will, but please correct me if I'm wrong. I've sen in Thailand (and Taiwan?) that they graft many different colors on to the same root stock. That seems like the slickest way to achieve your goal.

Good online places to buy from

Tons of great places in Florida, google will show almost all of them. The Bonsai supply is right in Orlando, Wigerts, Schely's, D&L, myself, Vagos, Durastone, a bunch more. Everyone has their specialties if you're looking for something specific. Also check out FB auctions and ebay auctions. I...

    Best way to propagate this?

You can always airlayer it if loosing the cutting is too much of a risk. Perhaps some members with indoor growing experience would know more about what the cutting may appreciate, like a humidity tent etc. I have no experience with that.

"Bald Cypress Primer" Ryan Neil's video at BonsaiMirai.com has me ripping my hair out

Any thoughts on growing BC in a flooded field (or containers) to stimulate fluting? Any tips or suggestions to get them to sprout knees?

    Native Juniper, Souther Red Cedar

I know, I know, not an ideal species. This first one I am not planning on grafting and am treating as an experiment. I want to see if I can coax it into producing mature foliage and being manageable (I don't have high hopes). The second will definitely be grafted if it isn't sold soon. Happy...

Great Selection of Trees on Auction this Week

That really depends on how many, email me what you're thinking. I'm getting low on Shimpaku right now and am trying to propagate all that I'll need because it is very expensive to source decent ones. Also I want to mention that the JBP have no root work done to them at all. I get mine in...

Great Selection of Trees on Auction this Week

Thank you! Bald Cypress is one tree that you can easily start with something small and grow a solid tree in just a few years. My 4" starter stock is almost wiped out and I won't be getting more until this Winter for anyone else looking for a few.
