    32 year old Acer Rubrum

This was the original nebari that had a carved hollow trunk which was the story. All things must pass as the tree filled the hollow. I would make this the front of the tree but I would have to tilt the trunk so far forward it would bury to frontal roots on this nebari. It might work if...

    32 year old Acer Rubrum

Hmmmm.....A bit shocking to see. Mostly because I've been looking at it's current angle for so long. Not sure about the branch angles in relation to the trunk which become a little inconsistent, although that could be altered with enough work. I feel the nebari would be degraded as well. For me...

    Beech defoliation

Thanks but I’m doing for a different reason. Trying to rid a disease.

    Beech defoliation

Well…… did you ever try this? Did it work out well? I have a sylvatica that is going to get it this season…..what was your timing?

    Arakawa Japanese Maple

Do you worry about the tree being exposed to room temperatures for the extended periods of travel time plus exhibition days for the silhouette show? I’ve thought of entering but leery of 5 days of heat.

    ROR Erodium

Update Coming along…. Just getting started with a lot of flowering. Here’s one I started last year to become a semi-cascade in one of my root pots. This is about 8 years old in a negari style.

Who is using LED grow panels?

If you look at the sorting menu bar at the top it says “average power draw” not equivalent lighting. The P2000 is 240 watts. ???????

Who is using LED grow panels?

I’ve been threatening to change over to LED from T5 Ho. I don’t see much of a power savings….the LED 240 watts compared to my 4 bulb T5, that are 216 watts. Am I reading this wrong?

    Bay Tree?

This just got a fairly hard cutback and partial defoliation. Trying to get it opened up for inner growth. The leaf are really starting to reduce and back-budding is vigorous. More leaves will be removed once the buds start pushing.

    Plectranthus....whats that?

Thanks leatherback! This really doesn't take a lot of time. I might spend three hours a year on it. No wiring, clip and grow. No repotting......this has only been repotted once in 9 years and only because I wanted to change the pot it was in. Their fun 'cause they trunk up so fast.

    Witch hazel ground layer

Time for the big cut! Once out of the pot I removed some of the larger roots to lighten the load and so I could split the cement with a hammer. After busting off the cement you can see where the girdle was covered to prevent bridging and how the new roots were segregated from the old root...

    Plectranthus....whats that?

Spring pruning........there wasn't very much to do. No winter flowers to cut off. Looking back at last years mishap which broke a large lower branch off, it's amazing to see how fast this plant can regenerate. The arrows in the photos show the beginning of the new branch and one year later. I...

    Witch hazel ground layer

With all this rollie coaster weather we've been having has started the flowers to decline. This is a sign the tree is waking up. I've poked around in the ground layer and there is definitely roots in there, so I decided to do the big cutback and get things started. I probably won't separate it...

    Full Moon Maple Development

Health wise….great. Fall color wise, less than remarkable. I think it needs to build a better root system for storing starches.

    Hand-me-down Carissa

Roy Minari gets good prices for his shohin pots. Not my cup of tea, but it shows there is a market. To get into that market takes a lot of showing up at shows and social media presence. Making the product is only 50% of selling art. I've been in the arts, in some way, most of my life and I'm...

    Hand-me-down Carissa

I do make smaller pots....however, they take me about the same amount of time as a larger pot. The only difference is how many I can fit into the kiln. So if I were to charge the same price as the larger ones I probably wouldn't sell many small pots.

    Hand-me-down Carissa

This flowers but not prolifically. Never has more than 8-10 flowers at a time. It doesn’t fruit. This thing fills the pot with roots in a season and so far it gets root pruned every two seasons. Doesn’t seem to skip a beat. The roots get so tight the core gets hydrophobic. I submerge it every...

    Hand-me-down Carissa

So it's been 4 years now for an update. I've shortened the cascade and filled in the front. Keeping the sphagnum on the top of the soil has been problematic. This year I cut a piece of bird netting about an 1-1/2" larger than the perimeter of the top of the pot, cut a hole in it for the nebari...
