    New JBP

Ha, good thing I didn't post a picture. Wouldn't want the forum to explode! Now I'll have to go find that thread though . . .

    New JBP

Try Southwestern white pine (pinus strobiformis). I haven't had mine for long, but so far it seems happy in Phoenix, and if it can survive my heat surely it would do alright in OK City. I got mine from Brent at evergreengardenworks.com.

Elm that thinks its a Ficus

I agree with the others, 2 should be the front and no tilt. Looks very ancient, and shows the best character of the tree. Just my two cents though, this has lots of potential so should make a nice tree whatever you decide. Keep us updated.

    Rainbow Eucalyptus for bonsai?

Bumping an old thread here, just wanted to see if anybody has actually bought seeds and tried these out? Eucs do very well here in AZ and I've got several different species I'm working with, but this one seems like it would be awesome. Please share any experience you might have. Thanks!

ANYONE air layer yaupon holly before?

I just got one of these so I've been reading up on them. They're supposed to do alright from cuttings, but that might take too long if you're wanting a larger bonsai, or some trees for your yard. If you try either cuttings or layering, let us know how it goes. Good luck!

    Simple Soil

Short answer: yes. Long answer: depends on who you ask. Here is the latest of many threads (seriously, there are tons here and on other sites) in the ongoing argument about proper soil mixes. Read it, think about it, talk to some locals that have nice trees, and then try it out...

    Another Mugo Pine B&B 2001

Without a standard measure, it's hard to judge the stock, but after reading that the trunk is larger than your arm, and then getting the box dimensions, that is indeed one powerful trunk. Looking forward to watching this one.

    expensive tools

I bought one of those cheap sets linked above. One works okay, the other has never worked right. I'm saving my money now for a good set, and I'll be following the advice above and looking to spend a little more.

Literati form and a Chojubai White Cascade

I like this tree a lot. It breaks some rules, but in my opinion does so gracefully, and with the measured irreverence of good art. Just enough to polarize people and make us think. I would be happy to have this on my bench. Well done.

    Japanese vs. Chinese

Local for me. Although I almost scored a sweet Yamaki pot at our club auction this week . . . Until the visiting teacher pointed out what it was and doubled my bid.

    I'm gonna make mini-forests

How did the forest project go over the summer? Any updates?

    Shohin Maple repotted

To me, unique features like this really make a tree. It looks random like in nature, which I love.

    Is Bonsai an Expensive Hobby?

I agree with the others, a lot of it is what you want out of it. If you want to have a few trees that help you relax and connect with nature, not too expensive. If you want to show trees at a high level, it will take a lot of time and/or money. For me personally, I just water most days which...

    Trees - Good homes needed!

I'm interested in the ficus if it's still around. Your message box is full, but you can send me one, or just reply here. Thanks, and good luck with the move!

Marc Torppa / Marc Torpa / Mark Torppa / Mark Torpa @ the Growing Grounds - AVOID

Some of the lute issue may be cultural. In Latin America, they tend to think of time differently, in a way that's very frustrating to us here in the US. It's a much more laid back, "I'll get to it sometime," type of feeling. The core question is interesting though as his stock looks pretty...

    Chinese Elm - managing dormancy

Where are you at? I live in Phoenix and the Chinese elms here usually don't lose all their leaves, though it seems to vary depending on the tree. Some will lose almost all, and some don't seem to lose any. So I don't think Chinese elms really need much of a dormant period. The bigger issue...

    A Pine seldom seen.

Hey Christian, The tree was collected during the first few weeks of June (can't remember the exact date of collection) up in the foothills in shaly soil. It was a trip caused by an unexpected death in the family and I hadn't planned on doing any collecting, so I wasn't super prepared, but...

    A Pine seldom seen.

Collected in Utah this summer. Hard to see all the character in this photo but it's all I've got right now, and not sure why it uploaded sideways (sorry) but here it is. Yes, collected in summer. And it's doing very well so far. It's in a 5 gallon bucket at the moment, so that gives some...

    A Pine seldom seen.

Pinyons came up a few weeks ago during a discussion about collecting at a club meeting. General consensus was they don't do well in Phoenix. Not sure if it's the lack of winter, too hot in the summer, or altitude. Up in Flagstaff they seem to do fine, and my brother-in-law and I collected a...

    Flattery or Sound Advice

Anthony mentioned AusBonsai, and I will confess to frequenting that forum more than this, even though I am in the USA. Now, part of that is because in Phoenix, Australian trees are readily available and grow very well, so I have quite a few of them. But a lot of the reason is I feel like the...

    Bottlebrush bonsai

Can you post the link for us? I would love to read more about yours, but the google search display is adjusted based on screen size, and I can't figure out which one you're talking about. The 4th down on the right on my screen is the one I posted on here that's grown by an Aussie. Thanks!

    Bottlebrush bonsai

I think it has potential. The base does look like it has some dead wood on it, which might be a concern. Is it a citrinus? They have different bark, but still good for bonsai. Here is an example of a really nice one. It's on display in the Australian national collection. Picture is from this...

    Bottlebrush bonsai

Here are my bottlebrush. I've had them both less than a year, so nothing great yet, but they have lots of potential. The first is a Little John that is tough as nails. I root pruned it hard when I got it and I thought I killed it, but it's kicking pretty strong growth right now. It's very...
