Not sure what to do with this. It's my first time making cuts on a bonsai. This Shimpaku is starting to just look like a shrub. So I've been mulling this over for weeks. Should I cut this big branch off? I feel like it is blocking too much of the rest of the tree. Or should I just wire it...

Don't let the soil completely dry out. Hopefully it has a good draining bonsai soil. It you can let it get some real sun every now and then and it will love it. Welcome to the hobby.

Spent about $150( Home Depot) made of Western Red Cedar. Plus another $15 for a 50% Shade screen that I haven't put on yet. I am thinking about making a nice shoji screen out of something outdoor tolerable.

In one of my bonsai books they show a type of grafting where you take the top pointy top off or a branch. and cut a big notch in the bottom trunk.. stick the top on top for a graft. Are there trees that this will or won't work for? I'm thinking about bald cypress to get a christmas tree...

I know it's probably because they're rare but is there any other reason like good for making jin/ shari, better foliage..flexible, simply beautiful? I've never seen one and trying to decide where to spend my time and money.

I can see growing at that angle.. all depends on what you do in the future. Maybe draw a sketch and post here what you have in mind for that branch. Or similar photo of the plan. Bringing it back to the right now I can see if you are going to have the right branch cascade off the right...

I have a Fukien Tea and wondering if I should get a moisture meter. More concerned about overwatering this than underwater.
