    Getting back into the forum

I've been gone for a while. Lots of new members! Yeah! I still have trees. Not as many but that's my problem. What I was wondering was where the hell is Sorce? Is he still a member? I have his phone number but last time I called he never called back. I am still in touch with Vance though...

    Hmmm.....

I found this about 3 miles from my house last year. I broke it while moving it to take the photo. And thats a size 13 boot next to it. Whatever left it was very large. I've seen bear scat and this isn't it. This looks human except for all the hair that was in it. Rupert wouldn't go near...

    About my trees

I'm down to 8. That's all. I lost every tree I owned this spring. Rain, freeze, warmth, freeze, rain, warmth. Nothing I could really do about it but let them go. No garage. Going to keep going though. Trees come and trees go. At least here they do. Looks like I'll always be a beginner.

What this years bonsai money bought this year.

Every year I save money for when I go to our club show. Quite a bit of money. There's trees, pots, tools and other assorted things begging to be bought. This year because of covid we didn't have a show. So what to do with this extra money? Keep saving it for next year's show? Not what I did. In...

    The promised hawthorn

I promised I would post a picture of this tree on a different thread. About 2 or 3 months ago. Better late than ever. I can't find the thread but then again I could have looked a little harder. That thread was about "sweating" hawthorns after collection. I don't subscribe to that...

Looking at a yew to collect.

But have never done one. How much can I hack off at collection time? Doing it this spring when I see buds move. It's 57 years old with about a 5 to 6 inch trunk at the ground. It has also been hedged every year. Also treat it like a pine or a juniper or a or a spruce or cedar? Or like a yew?

    HAPPY EASTER!

It's tough,I know. Not being able to be with loved ones in groups. Or being able to go to a church service like so many do. But just think of all the reunions to be had. All the catching up. Try not to think about the crap and call your friends and relatives today. Tell them how much you love...

    Meet Ghidora.

You've heard of Vances Dragon mugo. Ghidora is multiple headed dragon. I've never given a name to a tree before.

    Frary got a maple!

A big one too. An Amur maple I picked up last weekend from Ken Smith at The Flower Garden. It's kind of raw still and needs a bit of work but the basis for a decent bonsai is there.

    Some Tamaracks

Here are some tamaracks I collected last year. The buds just started pushing a week ago. I started collecting these things and leaving the mud on them. Just plop them in a colander and water. They really love their muck. The reason I do this I have almost 100%survival rate after collection...

Who has killed more trees than they have on their benches?

I'm talking bonsai here not the ones that die at work. I can safely say I have. I go through a lot of trees here. What with the voles, the cold and me they barely stand a chance. I'm down to about 140 trees right now,I had close to 250 once. I'm a trees worst nightmare.

A little something I collected today.

I was out looking for a couple jack pines to collect today. Driving along the trails and spotted this about 50 yards off the side of a snowmobile trail. It looked good at a distance. Short, lots of foliage. Couldn't see the trunk. It was sitting in a depression in the ground. As I got closer...

    Long lost brother.

When I was little. Like 4 years old,my younger brother, sister and I went to live with our great grandmother. Our parents weren't so great. I dimly remember a baby boy. My littlest brother. Years later when my mother got out of prison(really bad woman) I asked her about that baby. She said he...

    Smoking Down in Michigan!

I never thought it would actually happen in my lifetime. Legal weed. For recreational use. 12 plants. 2.5 ounces on your person at any given time. Cant smoke it in public or while driving.( Who would do such things?) It will take about a year but there will be stores with all kinds of good...

    M. Frary's 6 year mugo pine contest thread.

Can't grow just one kind. 42 of these. I did notice something with these and the Scots seedlings. They have very short stems compared to JBP seedlings. So no need for seedling cutting. These are Mugo Rostrata. An upright growing one.

    M. Frary's 6 year scots pine contest thread.

I told you JBP people it was coming. I have 46 of them. Auvignon blue Scots pine.

    A nightmare on elm street.

I planted a batch of American elm seeds this spring. I had I dont know how many sprout but I kept 100. Craziness! Next year I will be putting them up into 3 gallon containers for max growth. Not sure where I'll keep 100 3 gallon buckets. That's 48 in that upside down pallet.

If your pine looks like this.

You've got a problem. Lots of deadwood.

    Another Hornbeam

I've collected these trees before. With no luck. I didn't seal big cuts. Major die back. These aren't elms Toto! So I've been keeping my eyes peeled for one that is interesting. Found it walking the dog. It's also tough to find them with low branches. It's popping buds lower on the trunk...

    My 2 new Tammies.

Grabbed these 2 weeks ago. Both still in their swamp muck. They love that stuff. They get bare rooted next spring and put in pure D.E. for moisture retention.

    A couple of wild pines.

First is a Scots pine. Next up is a Jack pine. Both collected today. The Jack is about as big around as a pop can. The Scots is larger. I've been eyeing them up for almost a year now Well see how it goes. I've only got around a 50% survivability rate collecting in spring.
